Am I the only one who thinks that DMG makes very great sounding very flexible innovative products, but you look at the GUI and say, JESUS CHRIST....this is made for an audio geek. Way too much functionality or the functionality may be easier implemented?.
As a licensee of all his equalisers and his compressor, I had to stop buying his stuff, because although I think they are very flexible and great sounding, I personally find them intimidating, and as a result never use them..

They don't say to me, use me and move on to the next task in the mix. They say to me, lets spend an hour tweaking these instead of mixing.

Am I really the only one?

FabiFilter has the right approach to me.

Granted (as I imagine the advanced section is optional), but I don't know what it is about your GUI's that still leave me with the same feeling. Except Equick of course.

Being serious though, whilst it's true that we do make unapologetically complex (and sophisticated) plugins, we feel that we've really struck a good balance on this one.

We even had Bob Katz help us out with the ergonomics!

Well, I have played with it a bit now, and I'm really liking it a lot! Till now I thinked that Fabilter Pro-DS was the best de-esser ever (and I have tried everything), but this plugin is getting very near. I need to try it in deep.

We've added (optional) tooltips at the bottom of the screen to make it less intimidating as you learn to use it. If you still find it difficult to use, I'd really appreciate an email explaining what you found difficult, and we'll try and address your concerns!

It can be as simple or complex as you want to make it!

Personally I find it just right.

You can spend too much time in the garage polishing and checking spark plugs or you can get behind the wheel and just drive using the wheel, stick and pedals!

I've been using it for a few weeks, it's mind-blowing at loads of stuff.... De-essing, flattening bass, or making drum transients or body pop out the mix in upwards mode. My current fav is using it as a high frequency limiter on my drum buss. Smooth and punchy. It was great also having Bob Katz on the beta team, he got fully involved with great ideas.

PUMPED about this plug!!! And as for the complexity of the DMG line of plugs: i find the only amazing sounding plug that DMG makes thats too complex is Compassion. Everything else is worth the slight learning curve.

Dumb question - I'm not new to DMG (have EQuality and EQuilibrium) so I get the licensing procedures but when I uninstall the ZIP and double-click on the .reg file, my mac thinks it is a UAD file and tries to open it with the UAD utility which does not (of course) work. I tried manually getting it to open with Terminal and console but that didn't work either. I tried uninstalling the UAD utility and now I just get "There is no application set to open the document “Essence_demo_license.reg” I did try re-unzipping after tossing the UAD control panel.

anyone have any ideas? I'd love to demo this

You guys really need to keep in mind that this is NOT JUST a de-esser. I warned Dave about calling it "Essence", even if it is a fine name. This is what I would call a Weiss DS1 in plugin format.. well, it's not exactly the same nor does it sound the same but it has kind of the same functionality. It's basically a very flexible compressor! You can do all kinds of ridiculously awesome tricks with it! I hope my presets get included in the next update (was a bit late in submitting mine.. Dave is way too fast in coding! From warning to release was basically 48 hours heh), they showcase some of the awesomeness you can do with it that ain't de-essing.

+1 on the congratulations to Dave...but can you explain me how a de-esser can be "punchy"?

Try it on bass/drums/percussion, plenty of punch to be had. Like bManic said de-essing is the tip of the iceberg, you can extract the "essence" of all sorts of sounds with it and then rebalance the spectral content to taste, with no unpleasant side-effects!

Oh, I see. Yes, sometimes I do use a de-esser to round some drums and other content with strong attacks.

I need another de-esser like I need another hole in my head, but what you guys are saying sparks some interesting ideas. Will try.

Give it a bash and see what you make of it, but we're not talking about rounding drums a little, in upwards mode it can do all sorts of stuff - you can gate the drums to the hi-hats or pick the kick and snare and recess the overheads, or just grab a snare and make it sit back. It has a lot of applications you wouldn't normally pick a de-esser for (like making things sound very big).

I don't know, maybe still need more time with this, but so far on vocals I have preferred Fabfilter Pro-DS, Pro-MB and Sonnox deesser so far.

You could right click on any file and choose "open with" and then navigate to the application you want it to open with. You can do "get info" on the file and set which application it opens with and finally you can drag the file and drop it onto the icon of the application you want to open it with.

Having said that, perhaps you should just open the file from within the plugin or during installation.. That is quite common. I haven't tried essence yet, so I don't know how it works for this particular plugin.

Looking forward to giving this one a go, DMG stuff is always super high quality!
