FYIs… moved studios. Got a new monitor controller in anticipation of the move (Imperium from 2400 Audio) and even with my old Mogamis I heard a massive difference between the old controller and the new one at my old place. Sent my old Ghosts to get converted to XLR from TRS (yeah, I could have done it, but Robb offered at a fair rate) in the meantime. I had to use the Mogamis because my old controller was all TRS and the Imperium is all XLR.
Finally plugged in the Ghosts again after finishing setting up, and it’s like what I heard when I first got them. All the stupid words no one wants to hear when talking about cable. I heard more stuff in my old mixes, like what I’d change next time (especially where I was really struggling in the mix - would have helped to hear like this!), or more details in current mixes (too much compression! throwaway little audio decorations!).
I still stand by the idea that Mogamis (or “other quality cable”) will not keep you from making good music or mixes, but also that I sure am glad to have Ghost for my monitoring chain. It has already helped me since my original purchase, and now with the Imperium in there… holy cow. Such enjoyment in listening makes the job all that much more enjoyable and easier to do. Maybe there’s “better”, certainly there will be “different”, but it will take a lot of convincing for me to change again (Mogamis for about 10-15 years).
