Versatile, smooth, and detailed -- the Heiserman H47 is a nod to the classic Neumann 47 Fet, which was originally designed as a phantom powered version of the U47 tube mic. The H47 faithfully recreates the sound of the 47 Fet, and excels in all of the same uses. Two years in the making, the H47 was developed alongside, and compared extensively to an original 47 Fet. Here's a comparison of the H47 and a vintage u47fet. The audio bounces back and forth between the two mics. I made the cuts arbitrarily so as not to favor one over the other. There's no processing whatsoever on these files, other than to match the volume. The vintage mic is on the top and the Heiserman is on the bottom. It sounded to me like there was a LITTLE more low mid push with the Neumann. That's something I always found annoying though, so I preferred the Heiserman. It was so subtle though, it very well might have just been a difference in placement. I could hear it on my Barefoots, couldn't tell a difference on headphones. Sounds good, great job!

Good ears! That particular Neumann mic does seem to have a bit more low mids, but it's within 1 db or so.... well within the variation of any two mics. Also, like you suggested, it's something that most people would cut out. Thanks for listening.

Sounds excellent in the clips! Top end is smooth/handles sibilance very well. Which for me is often the hardest quality to find in a microphone. The bottom does seem a tad bit lean compared to the vintage but in a mix I would never know.

How similar is your current fet 47 to the ones you’ve made in the past? I recall James Lugo posting clips of one a while back that impressed.

The sound of the H47 is extremely close to the mic we built for James. The capsule has evolved a bit, but the differences are subtle. The main differences would be the new body, integrated mount, and the addition of a separate 6 db pad as in the original u47Fet.

Do you have a picture of the guts? Is it point to point wired?

It's built with a stack of PCBs with through hole components, similar to the u47 fet. It has tantalum and polystyrene caps, following the original schematic.

It's always nice when the mic company is the one behind the capsule. And vice versa!

Wondering about the transformer used, can any details be shared? Looks really great, I'll be sure to check out the sound cips when I'm home later.

Thanks!! I am very proud of the capsules we produce! Regarding the transformer, we are very happy to use Cinemag transformers. They really do a great job. This transformer is actually made especially for us and allows for the extra 6 db pad most do not offer..
We are also posting some further comparison clips soon...Drums! tom and kick compared with a great vintage fet47.

A lot of people have been asking for Drum clips -- so here we go!

Here's the H47 vs the Neumann u47 Fet on Drums:



For this video, we recorded a drum kit with a Heiserman H47 and a vintage Neumann U47 Fet placed outside the kick drum. The audio flips between the two mics along with different combinations of other drums. There is absolutely no processing on any of the kick drums (or toms, which were also recorded with H47's).

For the snare (sm57) and mono overhead (Peluso p12), there was some minor EQ'ing to remove some offending frequencies, but no processing otherwise. There is also no processing on the inside kick mic (Shure P91a). There's also some slight panning on the toms, and that's it!

I'll also be posting a separate video comparing the mics on Toms.

Looks like a great 47 at a very reasonable price! Will you develop a tube version?

The H47 Tube is in the works, and we'll be announcing more details before NAMM. Of course, being a tube mic, the price point will be a good bit higher.

Here is a pic of the soon to be released tube 47... Its on the same level as Flea an Telefunken in terms of build quality and sound. In fact the head basket is 100% compatible with a vintage u47. We are just working out a few details before the official release..

Any plans on a c12 or 251 type mic?

Well we already have a fantastic version of the ck12 capsule, true to the original.... so........ we'll just have to wait and see

I love them both but the 251 is more versatile for me.

I have to admit I lean towards the 251 as well.. Much wider range of sources. The c12 is beautiful but is a bit more limited.

Here's another comparison with the Neumann u47 fet. This time, both mics are on the floor tom, side by side. We positioned them as evenly as possible, but of course both mics are picking up slightly different parts of the drum. Nevertheless, I think it'll give you a good idea of how the H47 behaves on Floor Tom. Again, there's no processing whatsoever on the files, other than to level match them.

I'd hope the capsules can be interchangeable (one tube body with many capsule choices for different applications).
