Hello everyone!

I am planning on finally diving into Samuel Adler’s The Study of Orchestration. I have the 3rd edition and I have the workbook, but I don’t own the CDs. And when I look for it online it seems like they don’t sell the them anymore. The only copy I can find on sale is for 10 000$ on amazon and that is just a liiiiittle bit pricey for the discs..

Will I need the CDs to get the most out of this book or can I use it just as reading material?

I understand that the fourth edition has some kind of online content where you could access the media but I am not sure I can afford to purchase the book twice..

Why not trying to seek it up in a library?! When they have the book, they should most likely also hand out the CDs.

...otherwise look it up at antique book portals, like abebooks:

The CDs are helpful in that they contain the musical examples - but a lot of the music is probably available on YouTube in one form or another. The tricky bit is tracking down the right segment within each piece.

Doing basic MIDI mockups helps - and makes it easier to compare what's written with recorded examples.

Hi Pettah93, Did you ever receive these CDs? I have got a copy of the 3rd edition CDs but no text to go along with them (as of yet), I wanted to ask how the CDs correspond with the 4th edition? Are they referenced using the same numbering system or would you recommend that I purchase the older 3rd edition to go along with them? Thanks

Hi Robgriff! Yes I have the files but I have the 3rd edition of the book aswell so I unfortunately can't help you with how well they work with the 4th..

Maybe someone else can chime in?

On the other hand, I think you get access to the files online together with the 4th edition of the book so maybe that will solve your problems. Don't take my word for it but I believe they are included in the book purchase.

Just saw Adler's book on amazon.

No need -- the 4th Edition comes with a url and a user code that allows to log in and listen to the samples that are referenced in the 4th edition.

That's more of a 2018 way to make samples available, much more user friendly, and with the bandwidth speeds these days it's no longer an issue to stream content online.

Hey everyone! I know it’s been a while since this post has been active. I have the 6 CDs for the study of Orchestration 3rd edition. What I need is the CD-ROM that contains videos of each instrument and instrumental techniques used in the orchestra. That’s the golden egg!

Hello, I know this topic was discussed about five years ago, but I need these CDs. I know I can buy it, but I live in Turkey and I have to give a large part of my father's salary to buy the book. Luckily I have the pdf of the book. If you can see this message and send me the CDs, I would be very pleased.

Just stumbling on this thread now as I'm in search of these 3rd ed cd's and the cd rom along with y'all. Haven't found em for less then 200$ and was hoping you guys had some suggestions? I've got the book and workbook. Closest library that has the 3rd ed is 700 mi away ?

I purchased the third edition (in Italy the fourth edition does not yet exist, perhaps they are translating it?) and as you know there are no CDs (audio/video), nor the Workbook, nor the Instructor's Manual... and how you will have understood, I'm looking for these CDs and other things not included with the book... I have the 1st and 2nd editions of Adler, all CDs in the original box, the score examples booklet, and the workbook. Amazon has the same CD set for $329 and the hardcover book for $84, but I can't find the score booklet or workbook for sale anywhere. 4th edition is only $50 from B&N.

Seems rather backwards that Adler's own works can be heard for a tiny fraction of a penny on Spotify. Adler has written a lot of great music. Buy his original works CDs instead of paying Spotify. Hearing his compositions and orchestration will give you great additional insight.
