I’m using an Apollo x8 with a Heritage OST-8 ADAT and I’m having issues when using the Apollo as the clock source. I appear to have everything set up correctly, but will get a random click. It seems like it could be a minute or two between clicks or sometimes 15 minutes, so totally random.

I have the clock source in Apollo console set to Internal, I’m running a Canare 75ohm cable from Apollo WC out to Heritage WC in, Term switch is engaged, and the heritage is set to external clock and link light is illuminated. Everything seems like it should be ok, but the issue persists. When I use the Heritage unit as the master with clock source set to ADAT in Apollo console (and match sample rates between units) I’m not getting the issue. Is it possible that the word clock cable is the problem? It’s a brand new cable from Redco, so it seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened…

FWIW, I've had this same problem with the OST-8 ADAT and my Antelope Discrete 8 synergy core interface.

Are you only having the issue when clocking via word clock? Also, are you getting the click on all inputs or just the Heritage? I mine back to be serviced, so I’m hoping this gets addressed.

I had the click issue as well as intermittent drop outs. The unit later had an issue with 48v power so it was sent back for a new unit. On the new unit I get random drop outs when using it as a slave over word clock. Haven’t tried using it as a master yet, but it’s very frustrating.

Just in case anyone else had this problem, I contacted Heritage Audio and they suggested I send the unit in for a firmware upgrade that should fix the problems the OST-8 ADAT has when receiving word clock.

What I did was purchase an old aardvark clock distributer and run the OST-8 and run everything off the OST-8 ADAT's clock, as I didn't get any drops when using it as the source clock.

Did you ever get this sorted out?

I just got a replacement unit and it unfortunately has the same issue.

Did you get a new unit or did you send yours out for the firmware update that heritage offers?

For me, the turnaround time to send in the unit to get its firmware updated and then have it sent back was too long, as I had sessions on the calendar and needed it. I've been using the clock distributor with no problems.

This was a completely new replacement unit from Heritage's stateside distribution. I was told that they couldn't replicate the issue and they sent me a brand new rack. I'm sure troubleshooting an intermittent issue is tough on their end.

I have verified that everything works totally fine using the OST-8 as the master clock source over word clock or ADAT, but I ideally would like to use my Apollo as the master.

Does anyone out there have the Heritage ADAT rack and if so, have you successfully been able to get it to slave to an external clock? So far, I haven't been able to find anyone who has.

I assume that most users are just running these over ADAT and using the Heritage unit's clock as the master. I would love to use my Apollo as the master though and it's starting to feel like it might be an impossibility.

I have an OST 8 adat with issues as well when using an external clock. I contacted Heritage and they want to update the firmware and switch out the adat ports... I have had issues with getting optical cables to fit properly.

I ended up getting rid of mine. Sweetwater was awesome and allowed me to return it over a year after purchasing. The fact that both units had the issue, combined with the stories I’ve heard about other users with the issue didn’t instill much confidence. The whole ordeal was incredibly frustrating and left me unable to run my studio as normal for months. I ended up just adding a second Apollo and haven’t had any issues since.
