That's right, it's what they call a safe assumption. They're not selling a lot of the PCM software, and even a Silicon version wouldn't change that much, therefore it's "no longer the asset it once" was and there's not much reason to put a lot of $$ into it. They may be awful at product management but this truism can't be lost on them, in fact it perfectly explains why they're dragging their feet. If there was money to be made in an update we'd have seen it years ago, when everyone else updated to Silicon. That was my point and it's tough to see it any other way. None of this discounts the merits of the product, so no need to take offense. I love its sound, hence my constant nagging to get it updated.

I had a chance to compare PCM96 with Native bundle, and while the difference in sound between software and hardware was significant, it revived my interest to PCM Native as well. Now I'm using both.

I think it still has a pretty good value as a reverb, not so much for multi effects or delays. It will be great to have it as VST3.

Other than DAW's included reverbs, I own Softube's TSAR (base, not full), Waves H-Verb, Liquidsonics Reverberate 3 and 7th Heaven (base, not full) and Valhalla's Shimmer.

Also whatever is in Komplete, Korg MDE-X and Roland ZenFX.

I have to say I like Waves H-Verb a lot, and probably use that the most. Not a lot of character, but does what it says on the tin, and fairly easy to use.

Valhalla Shimmer is good for when you want THAT sound, but it is very specific and I guess could be conceived as dated to some.

Liquidsonics was the best I had heard in 2010, but now they don't stand out as much. Still like them, though.

TSAR is just alright, hardly ever use it these days.

I'm sure there are newer, better sounding ones out there, but I feel like I have enough to work with. I would like to try EastWest Spaces at some point.

Lol, I think I know what you mean. Frankly, I have never even opened an instance of their verbs. I just assumed Komplete comes with reverbs as well.

To me, yes, CRP > TC > HDC > the rest.

My ears have yet to hear any reverb, and I've tried most, that's better than CRP. Doesn't mean it's always the right reverb for the job, though.

Caveat: I don't really like even the "best" IR-based reverbs compared to algo ones.

I thought the PCM Native plugins were the same algorithms as the PCM96. Maybe I'm thinking of a different box.

You are correct, it is the same algorithms, but still the same presets in plugin and hardware sound different.

It's my understanding that if parameters are equal between them, the plugin should render the same sound as the hardware when the hardware is used digitally. If the hardware is analog, certainly the D/A and your DAW's A/D will alter the sound to some degree.

I had the hardware (via digital I/O) side-by-side with the plugin for many years and didn't detect any difference.

i originally had the native then bought the 92 then sold the native then bought crp then sold the 92 then bought the native and then bought the 92 again.
now fortunately i have both. i am glad that you recognise the differences as to me the hardware is something very special and has a depth of beauty to it.

yes you may be right, it may have been my tc 4000 that was using digital, and that i didn’t like so much, but not 100% sure.
currently only got the 92 a few months ago and just tested to see works properly and yes that is analog outs, but i haven't been using much as setting up studio , so not been switched on…much like my synths.
i will test more thoroughly and get back to you.
but you may well be on the right track as i was heavily into summing back on my first ownership of the 92, so perhaps that could have been the difference. just seemed to be thicker more depth on an isolated vocal, i could listen for hours…

And, shockingly, it’s possible to have a digital software reverb be digital and analog.

They’re all still “digital reverbs”.

PCM96 is still an excellent machine. I wouldn't turn down using one if it was available. It's also multichannel unlike the software.

A typical 19-inch reverb unit is a hybrid — it’s both digital and analog.
If you’ve got more questions about it, best to check with someone else.

It’s like having a digital oscillator in an analog synth — you’re always gonna get some noise and analog artifacts. Could be a filter inside the rack unit.

Exponential Audio's Symphony and Stratus are great software derivatives of the PCM that support multichannel, up to Atmos, from the same developer who was intending to take his work to the next level.

Those two are my best reverbs on hand but that one license limitation is suffocating...

Something is different about their setup, or a step is being introduced in the hardware, if the sound varies between the two. They are simply the same algorithms. Same sound. I used firewire, not AES, and I can't speak to what might affect your AES connection. Sample rate conversion perhaps.

Not that it's a bad thing. If you prefer the hardware then obviously that's great. But I think we left the theorizing back in the PCM thread(s) when Michael verified all this.

I got hipped to MorphVerb a while back, and I like the sound and the interface.
