So here's another one of my random questions: Does anybody else prefer colorful and unique-looking modules?

The reason I ask is because I just got my SPA and my Cinnamon in today and I think they are GORGEOUS looking. But when I was buying the Grandpa, I remember reading a comment on Muff's that they wouldn't buy one until it came with a metal panel. This Grayscale thing has become such an industry that somebody was willing to pay me for an old Grayscale panel that came with my Braids that was scratched to hell and back and they were actually surprised that I sold it for so little in spite of the condition. I can't possibly be the only one that looks nifty-looking modules, can I? Even if they are mismatched, I think that the Bastls look beautiful next to the Dwarfcraft, the Synthrotek panels, the 4ms panels, and this DIY Barton drum that I have that has a little comic art embedded into the panel. My Elements is Grayscale, and not only do I think it looks hideous, but when I was changing out the OS, I found out that they took liberties with the names of the inputs. If there's an industry for making your instrument look like a boring colorless blob, then wouldn't it stand to reason that somebody could have some fun and move some product if they offered custom panels with neato artwork? Would anybody else be interested in this sort of thing?

That is weird that they changed their name. I really don't get that. Stillson Hammer mkII does look awesome, though. I'm looking at that and think that would make an awesome substitute for my Oberkorn. Oberkorn is fun, but sliders would be soooooo much more convenient.

I'll have anything in my rack as long as its aluminium, I made an exception for Rene, I won't go near Bastl until they do aluminium I just extremely dislike the wood look as much as I dislike plastic panels.

Jusr go for a maths and get it out of the way! 2x complex envelope/LFO/Slew generators/clock dividers/envelope followers/LPFs/attenuverters/Logical signal mixers @ $270.. Or befaco rampage does the same thing for $150 if you can DIY it, with some different character.

Bastl CV trinity also a good option. Same size/price as maths, but gives 6 channels which can each be an envelope, LFO, or knob recorder with clocked quantization (step sequencer, selectable 8, 16, 32 steps) all with clock syncable functions. Not as "immediate," requires some "menu diving," but offers many more functions and greater control than maths or most any function generator on the market.

100% agree, I love mixing it up and I love cool looking panels. The only thing that bugs me biut bastl is how thick the panels are and that they dont really fit into most racks properly, especially next to other modules. They always feel a bt loose and wobbly. That being said, I'm a mega bastl fanboy and always recommend their **** to everyone. Quattro Figaro is the best value and featureset on any small VCA in euro imo. CV trinity gives more control in one module than anything I can think of regardless of price or size (the only hard competitor I can think of with maths/rampage as an ultimate control/CV processing module in the sane price range) and knit rider is practically just a CR at half the same and 1/3 the price without a couple features I'd never use anyway. All their other modules are ace too

Everything in my rack is boring aluminum except Rosie which I think is the same material as Rene. I think its really clever how they used the transparent panel holes for the A and B leds. I like black panels in general like the Roland system 500 and new vintage Deopfer panels. At the end of the day though it's all about sound and usability. The later is why I can get a little obsessive about knobs. I kinda hate the blue knobs on MN modules. It's impossible to see where they are set in low light. I also really want to knob up my tiptop808 module. Wiggling shafts is just no fun. I'm trying to get in on a group buy of white Rogan knobs on muffs for these reasons.

I did some rearranging of the modules to group everything together better. The side effect of this that I hadn't counted on is that because all related modules are now grouped together (oscillators, modulators, filters, effects, etc.) this means that I needed a lot of long cables to get from one section to another, hence I was buried under wires by the time this thing was put together. The ultimate in cable spaghetti.

I've got one module with a plastic panel that annoys the hell out of me: That Uoki-Toki Subkid. Cool module, but the plastic annoys me for one reason: Getting the nuts to stay on the CV output jack is impossible. I'm constantly having to unmount that thing and put it back together. Otherwise, I do like my Razmasynth modules for their clear plastic. The Super Warp Generator looks pretty awesome with CV running into it because the LED makes the whole thing glow.

I haven't run into any troubles yet concerning Bastl's thickness, but the Zlob THEQ drives me nuts because that one's like a mile and a half thick. Looking down at the row it's on right now, it's the only one sticking out and it's doing so by about three millimeters. I had to really dig to find screws that would hold it in.

...I love the way their modules smell. I know that's weird, but sticking my nose right between the Grandpa and the SPA gives me a scent of magic. And those wood knobs just really make them stand out from anything else.

That Ripples panel looks cool as hell! I'll agree that black looks really nice. My Great Destroyer looks wicked awesome with the black panel and the red text and spine graphic.

Following up on this idea a bit more, I contacted the guy I bought my BMC18 from. Not only did he do a wicked job with the comic graphic on this module, but for a while he was also selling blind panels with kittens and cupcakes on them. The vibe I got from him (he also included a sticker with funky graphics) is that he was at least trying to start a business doing module-building and making custom panels, so I'd like to see what his sales were like and how much of a reaction he got, maybe encourage him to try doing custom panels?

Going back off topic, can I go ahead and apologize for my remarks about Portland? I was on a thread on Muff's where folks were mocking how obnoxious vegans are and just before I unleashed a lower intestinal tract full of tofu and rage all over that thread, I remembered I kinda did the same thing on this thread. Hey guys, I noticed while looking at envelope modules that none of them come with an "amount" knob. What is the right way of achieving the amount function in a eurorack system? Do I need an attenuator or something like that?

VCA. That's your amount knob for everything.

You actually don't need a VCA if you aren't trying to CV control the amount. If you're going for a static setting, you just need attenuators or an attenuverter which lets you dial in negative amounts. These are typically cheaper than VCAs. A lot of modules also include some combination of those at least on their major functions so in those cases just use the built in ones. I use the Triatt or Maths 2 and 3 channels for cases when I need to scale a CV signal.

Somebody posted a cement mixer playing polyrhythms in the MW group on FB, so I dropped a sample of it into my NW1 and A-112 for this weirdness.

Check the module you want to hook up to. A lot of them have CV amount knobs on them. Not all of them, but many of them.

If not, an attenuator will work, but you may want to look at some VCA's anyway to at least start with. Even if you're not using them as attenuators, they're handy as hell for gating signals and dynamically modulating amounts.

So from what he's saying, the custom panels are doing fairly well, so there is a market for this sort of thing. My wife's been looking for an art project to start on, so I'll pitch this to her and see what she thinks. She's kinda terrible with a lot of art stuff, but she does really good abstract patterns, so could be fun to see if she can do a couple panels for me. The jack/pot labels are going to be tricky, though.

Wish they'd do a freq shifter!! Thats the only module I cant seem to get anywhere as its only in the STS Klangshift and Soup Kitchen 1, both which also have the WAD as a big part of the panel, and I already have a WAD elsewhere so they'd be a massive waste of money and space -.-

Well you never know septik he's slowly releasing stuff, the only one he won't release is WAD because of certain chips not being available anymore.

Cheers that's a module i really wanted and i was always going to consider a serge panel including it. That and the vcfq is pretty awesome for any euro user.

speaking of frequency shifters, I've been looking into them lately, but they look like hard modules to get right (especially for analog). the modcan seems like a good digital option. I have a vague idea of wanting to combine one with a mungo delay, but that probably doesn't make much sense. what are some other good shifters?

Roman (sputnik) has just designed the first affordable euro analog freq shifter (theres one other that is $1500) based on the juergen haible circuit (very good PS!) so I'd look out for that one. I remember him telling me either $500- $700 last we talked
