since I moved to Sequoia I no longer have the need for a pinguin meter or similar, it's all there... but I sometimes use voxengo's span in addition, great!

I've used a Dorrough 280-D for a handful of years. Digital out into meter. RMS and peaks. Done. Call it a day.

I'm loving the Waves Dorrough

WLM is also great. I'll master with it or put on the master buss.

The Dorroughs, I'll have just about everywhere else. Gotta say though that that Logic's meters have recently received a bit of an upgrade with a choice of several ballistics, making them a lot more useful than they used to be.

Waves Dorrough:
- shows peak and RMS
- fast and accurate
- the only downside is that I wish the "LEDs" were brighter

NuGen Visualizer:
- superb set of meters
- fully customizable display, ballistics, range, colors, fall times, etc

NuGen MasterCheck
- excellent tool for mastering, but also just for monitoring a mix
- shows PLR! (peak to loudness ratio)

Logic Multimeter
- much improved in the latest Logic (10.2.1)
- now includes loudness measurements (but no PLR yet)

PSP TripleMeter
- VU, RMS, and PPM meters
- gain/trim control - use this in Logic at the top of every channel strip

I'm also a fan of Waves Dorrough, it's has just enough features for metering film or music but not so much that I get fixated into it.

Mind you if you use Logic then it's meters have been recently updated, also worth checking out.

Certainly won't be as flexible as the aforementioned 3rd party plugins, but still may prove to be useful nonetheless.

KLANGHELM VU meter is excellent if you're without the hardware...

I always use the FABFilter Pro L meter the RMS is a joy...

What metering plug takes up the least monitor space and looks good. Would like to use one edge of the monitor. I have the waves-dorrough plug, and it takes up way to much space. I also have a hardware analog dorrough, but I also need a tool in the box.

Other requirements: Average, peak/balistics all at the same time. K-20 levels.

Sonoris Meter is nice and small and does what you need. Would be nice if it was updated with the new loudness standards though.

Btw. it has also K-weighted average meter acc. to BS.1770-1

Yeah I think the Dorrough needs a size in between Small and Medium, personally. Neither is an ideal size for me.

Mind you I also have a 27" Retina display so I tend to have more space than most.

Other than that I don't mind the size to much. It's usefulness seems to make up for it in my case.

I like the Hornet VU meter to quickly level tracks. Not doing mastering so can't speak to critical use.

after using rtw mastering tools i switched to hardware - rtw primus

it's great to have the meter on a discretely monitor without using the main cpu, who show me permanent, what i hear.

before i had a pinguin audio meter pro on a fanless barebone, but the rtw looks so much better ;-)

You're welcome. I believe, Martin have done very good job with his open source plugins. Simple, functional. Also clear readout, very nice ballistics and refresh rate (I would say.. hardware like, which is very nice on eyes).
