sm7 pre-amp?

I 've read the sm7 needs a high gain pre-amp.
I have a motu ultralite, will this work?

I doubt...SM7B really shines with high quality preamp in my experience...as any dynamic. Though this one need a lot of gain.

I remember when I had my vintech 72, my sm57 sounded incredible. Unfortunately I don't have that kind of cash right now.

with a dynamic mic (like the sm7) a high end pre amp will make a huge difference. Anything with lots of clean gain will be good.

My voice over talent has a loud voice, is my moto ultralite still out of the picture?

If so, what is a budget pre-amp someone would recommend?

maybe. check the manual to see what the gain is on the preamps. You'd proably want in the area of 60dB. Next try turning up the gain to this level with no mic pluged in and see how much hiss there is. If there is more than you will want on your final recording then get something else.

Ok. my ultralite goes to 60db but the last 5 db are noisy.
I'm open to suggestions on a nice pre for the sm7

Not quite as much as the SM7B, but it still needs a lot. I think the RE27 is a little hotter still.

The Grace 101 is about $500-550 and it is super clean and a world class league mic pre, for little money.

SM7B sounds good through almost every pre I have used it. But so far the absolute best one has been Great River. DAV ain't bad either, but I like the hair GR is giving to the sound.

I get good results from my SM7 and my RNP. It is nice on the great river too.

RE20 does not need as much gain, but I prefer the SM7 in more cases.

SM7b sounds amazing through my CL 7602. Love it for vocals especially.

well then give it a try. it wont shine as it will with a higher end pre but if the source is loud enough then it should work. i never need more than about 50db gain on my SM7b.

I stopped using my Sm7b until I bought a Focusrite 1sa 428. Lots of clean gain but the impedance switches really alter the sound.

or the Grace 101, great pre from a great compnay, a little cheaper than the TRP but only one channel, though it does include phantom, which the SM7 doesn't need.

P.S., the RNP is kind of a lousy deal.

I've tried my Sm7b through both my Trident S20 and Mackie Onyx pre's...obviously not in the ballpark of great river, but both sounded pretty good.
