Hey electronic noobie!! finding exactly who you are?
Hello Noob
SO you just heard the one song that has made you want to go full on musician without any natural born talent.
Then you have come to the right place, 'ole Zip is going to tell you what mistakes he made in this lifelong journey.
I think it was Front 242 or Ministry that made me want to get into electronic music. Those crazy ass electronic sounds just swept me off my feet and I went all in. So originally I thought I needed to be a keyboardist, so I bought some $5 cheap Casio keyboard at the thrift store and thought I was a keyboardist playing the one finger sound fx(LOL). My guitarist buddy showed me a few chords, then I went out to the Community College , took piano and music theory classes(music theory I strongly suggest you learn) did all of this without any natural ear for listening to key or scale. Without any ability to play solid rhythm, even playing in a hard rock band with our phenomenal drummer growling at me when ever I was off.
Finally realized I was not a keyboardist but kept trying to make electronic music. Finally the DAW's came and eventually I settled in with FLStudio and spent the next 12 years learning it.Also messed around with different projects audio related (making speakers, hardware and software samplers.) just wasting time.
Then about 2 years ago I built a studio in my house, and I wasted some more money on outboard gear that I didn't really need but it does make the studio look purdy.
I eventually realized all I need is the keyboard controller, my pc ,interface and monitors and thats it. I also taught myself even more music theory, and started deconstructing my favorite artist's songs( I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU DO THIS)
And now I pump music out everyday like crazy and I love it only problem is I am getting old as heck and the dream of playing live is fading away. So my suggestion noob is for you to figure out exactly who you are. Me I would say i am a producer/composer, I like to create, beats ,melodies , electronic sounds. I also have learned that what was once called Disco has morphed into techno, then house, trance, dubstep and all these genre's . Its hard to keep up with it all.
Then there is the reality of life is that you need money to survive in this vicious world and electronic music is a vacuum for your money to get sucked up into. In todays scene , you have to be beyond average to make money in music, and I think in the future its going to be even harder to make money music wise.
So figure out who you are, keyboardist? DJ?, Producer? Engineer? And buy exactly what you need and don't waste money on non essential eye candy its a sickness really.
Well if you gotten this far, good luck noob
