I have bought numerous white noise machines but they are all a appointment, even the one that has a physical fan inside as opposed to digital.

I have also tried white noise apps and websites connected to my speakers, this is also far from perfect for a number of reasons.

So I though why not find a cheap synth or module to suit my needs.

I would like a variety of noises - brown, pink are softer - white is usually too shrill for me. Would a cutoff filter on white noise essentially give me something closer to pink or brown noise?

Trying to think how I would trigger it? Would need a midi keyboard with latch/hold?

Do you have any suggestions?

Is it for tinnitus? I use an app called ReSound Tinnitus relief. In fact, I can't sleep without the app, as my tinnitus has gotten much worse lately.

Got tinintus and also noisy neighbours.

I have a few apps that look like that, also have babbling brooks, bird song etc as well as fans and white noise but they all became annoying and unbearable after a while. Hence something a bit more customizable, with knobs, would be preferable to dial in a sweet spot.

70USD a year seems very steep, does this do anything special? I have apps that seem the same as this for free.

Do you use headphones or plug your phone into speakers or what?

Hmm, I haven't paid anything for mine... I actually use soundscape 5 all the time, it's more of a never ending ambient piece.

I will try it out, the ambient loop sounds good. I am constantly adjusting though, so would be good to have something with knobs.

You can easily shape all kinds of noises out of white with EQ and filters.
And you can easily get true white noise from any digital synth.

Paying for it is getting scammed.

Not sure if they do anything other than pure white noise, but there's the Glo and Gecko ...

I wish there were noise cancelling surround speakers, like the headphones. Everyone would buy a set. They'd even be popular with married couples!

As far as a steady noise to drown out an irregular noise - the problem is, the steady noise has to be in the right frequency range, sure, but it also needs enough amplitude to overcome the other sounds. That's why I wish it was targeted via a mic and dsp, like the nc headphones, which are bulky and and if slept in, lead to a stiff neck. I don't know of any product like noise cancelling speakers. Anyone?

The usual blunt force method (judging by view count) is one of those 10 hour YouTube videos offering various and sundry relaxing sounds, loud enough (or speakers close enough) to blend with the neighbors' cacophony. It's like building jetties. Then the next neighbor downstream has to drown out your sound, and the further neighbor has to drown out the next neighbor, and so on down the line. Pretty soon you have a beach full of jetties. But, everyone prefers their own brand, so it works out, kinda.

I’ve been using an iPhone 3 into an iHome clock radio for my daughter since she was born. The app we use is Relax Meditation, though it used to have a different name... I forget. Anyway, you can run MP3s in it, or choose between tons of different sound/noise types.

I use bluetooth wireless earbuds. With nothing on, they're just decent earplugs.
If things are noisy, then a Spotify playlist can drown out the background as needed.

But like whatever17 mentioned, don't forget other causes of sleeplessness. One of the main culprits are screens, especially blue light. Try a night mode app, and/or just stop looking at any screen -- phone, tablet, pc, tv -- at least a couple hours before bedtime. HTH

I just use a plain, LOUD fan. I like the breeze and the fact that it masks out all noise. I got into the habit when I lived about a block from a hospital, complete with psych ward. I never knew what "unhinged" meant before that.

I use an air purifier to help me sleep. Makes the perfect amount of noise to mask any background noise. Tried a white noise machine and it just sounded too small and localized. The purifier is much more soothing.. plus, it cleans the air and my wife says it helps with her allergies. Total win for me!

I've used this model for about 10 years; the Marpac Zohne (Marsona) portable sound conditioner. I have several; for travel, home and away. Sadly, the power connector is non-standard, so you have to be careful with it.

OP i believe the marsona 1200 is what you are looking for. Usually pretty cheap on ebay.

I have had the same experience of finding many sound machines and noise apps to be too repetitive. The widex zen app has some less repetitive options altho not necessarily sounds you will like.

Simply Noise, as mentioned above, is also a useful app. Worth paying the small price to unlock volume mod. The free version is just steady noise.

tried a number of the contemporary bedside sound generators last year and the marsona 1288 was the only one that seemed worthwhile to me. Its much more expensive than the 1200 tho and the 'advantage' of the 1288 is bad samples of frogs and birds.

definitely hipster. I know of at least one person who uses it for music.

Sorry to say i don't know a lot about their provenance. I think made from 60s thru 80s but that is a guess. Could not get a clear idea of what the difference between 1200 and 1200a is, either. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in?

Not what you asked, but I use the "ambient sounds" feeds to my Amazon Echo 5, which I use as a nightstand alarmclock. I like it.

It would be easy in eurorack (or many synths):

* Noise Module
* Filter
* Mixer
* VCA
* Attenuators

Some AM on the VCA end to subtly raise and lower the volume, some Cutoff modulation on the VCF, some CV control over the Mix of Noise types...

See now, I would stay awake trying to figure out cool ways of getting to sleep your way :-)

Get a raspberry pi, install supercollider, write five lines of code.

BS2 works great for this.
