I been using three different ones...depending on the type of music. The Reddi by A designs and the Fatboy Di by Teegarden. Both are tube but very different from each other. The fatboy' has to me a little more " stank" on it or a little more grawl
In my opinion. Both are awesome. Ya no that pain of loosing your tone by switching from playing with your fingers to thumb back groovin? On both DI's
my friends that issue is gone,gone gone. For me Fatboy for rock and Reddi for
R&B.....for now. And last I like the Tonelux Mp1 preamp which I've had for awhile

gc sells J basses for as low as $200. So I assumed the more high end models were maybe double the price?? so that's where the $400 actually came from.

Although IMhO it would make more sense to buy a $400 mic pre and a nice $4000 bass like a Warwick, Pedulla bass or perhaps an Alembic?? I think it's situational but it is well known in the recording industry that the source sound is the most important aspect of recording. However we all have a different approach and whatever works is cool... I apologize for you taking me the wrong way in my earlier post. I'm really sorry I didn't specify that I was joking. Well, considering if the source is a J bass, as opposed to a Warwick, Pedulla or an Alembic - you realize they're totally different in terms of how they sound, how they feel to the player, how they sit in the mix, etc...each is a distinct instrument and tone, and aren't interchangeable.

You might as well say a Hofner is the same as a P-bass is the same as a Rick is the same as a Stingray, etc...

However, for the record, your guesstimate of the price of a J-Bass would only be true for the 'student' models (squire etc) that are not what working/recording musicians generally use. Your $400 estimate was out by about a factor of four (or more, depending on the model and vintage etc). Eg:

You might be saying to yourself, jeez that’s a lot of compressors, but they all are doing small things.

I also split the signal after and run it back into my Aguilar tone hammer into a Tg2 preamp (and distressor) for distortion channels if the song calls for it.

All the above sounded solid for sure. Jule Monique for the win, though.

The Monique feels the best, I don’t know how to describe it, but as a bassist it’s by far the most natural. It’s eq is clear and impressive, no weird phase or artifacts in the lows. I no longer have to use my pultec clones in the chain.

I don’t use it for live use, but I’d be stoked to have this drive a power amp.

I decided to give 500 series modules a try and so far I am impressed.

Lots of great options. Chiming in to say that I'd not had my Ampeg SVP-CL plugged in for quite a while due to disappearing rack space, but space opened up last week and I gave it a fresh go. Beyond fantastic. Perfect tone as far as I'm concerned. The right balance of clarity, girth and sub-bass weight.

And since the REDDI keeps getting mentioned, I'd been using that (in plugin form) for a couple years and it brings the right kind of mojo as well. Pleasing and authoritative harmonics.

I've since simplified my setup, it's now just a Monique.

It's good to see that he's still at it. He'd modified an Orange Tiny Terror for me many years ago. Made it more hi-fi, less of a Terror.

I'm still surprised that nobody mentioned the Millennia TD 1 or the Millennia STT1. All the bass player I recorded, were amazed by their sound...

I don’t know of a better option for bass, other than a real b15.

I own an Ampeg B15r so maybe I dont need to re-invent the wheel.

There’s a lot of different tastes out there. I don’t think my advice works in metal or faster rock, But for that deep, fundamental that reacts to your finger, doesn’t lose the punch no mater what, the Monique/b15 .

I would really love to see a 500 series Monique. Since they made the Simone I think its possible.
