As an owner of an 8014, I try to keep a eye on the prices, even though I'm not looking to sell. In a recent conversation with a dealer who brokers such consoles, he told me from 120k to 150k for a fully loaded board in good condition, depending on the configuration.

The main value of these desks, as always, is in the mic pre/EQ's and comps, so the configuration will have a big factor on the overall price. And the prices of vintage 1073's and 2254's have skyrocketed in recent years, so that's a big part of it. But even a frame with 1883's and 1272's will come with a steep cost, as all those components are also now in high demand. I would guess that a frame with routing modules and 1272's (and this is just a guess) would set you back north of 30k for a board in good shape. Hope that helps -- JB

The picture below is my "partially" unloaded 8014 frame, which I purchased in the last six months. The 1073's were all sold by the time I learned about the frame but my 8014 does have four Neve 2254's compressors installed.

Fully serviced original Neve 1073's would sell between 5.5K - 7K each in today's market....if you could find them -- unfortunately most have been parted out by now. Multiply by 16 and you're between 88K and 100K just for the 1073's. The frame in "good" condition brought up to spec and depending whether it has an 8 channel or 16 channel monitor section AND depending on modifications (if any) in today's market would fetch between 35K - 60K.

A pair of 2254's brought up to spec will go between 7.5K - 9K per pair. So multiply that by 2 if you want to have four 2254's as the console was designed.

So on the low side you are probably around 140K and at 175K on the high side. This is very consistent with the information JB posted above, I just thought I'd break it out in a little more detail based on my recent experience.

Last one I saw was 100k, but i believe half the modules were AMS reissues. Also, for 150k there was a 8058.

Those prices are insane though, 7K for a 1073? Absurd. No matter how well you restore those things, they always keep giving trouble, in the midst of a session. Imagine a whole console with dozens and dozens of 40 y.o switches and pots driving you crazy.

The studios that still have one of those 80xx desks running on a daily basis have had to invest in restoring as much as what they paid for the console, which wasn't a small amount, just to keep them in shape for professional use.

If I was after such a thing I'd honestly would just pass on the vintage thing and would get instead 16 Heritage 1084s and an SSL Matrix as a mixing frame, perhaps adding a Chandler Mini Rack Mixer for summing (Matrix direct outs into the Chandler) so to have the sonic option of something thicker with less transients, like a 80xx desk. All of it for 60k, brand new and with all the Automation and DAW control one requires these days.

We have a 1972 all Class A 8028 here at Grandmaster recorders... similar to the one at Sound City that Dave Groul bought and I believe only around 5 were made before Neve moved on to the 8038.

When I first came to the USA the console had been maintained by total morons masquerading as Neve "techs" and charging mega $$$ for doing work that nearly ruined the console. I flew out from the UK to look at it and was blown away when I saw the abuse and the consequences... the full story is on my web sites Ask Geoff stories page.

That said, the console was recapped and kept in shape by me. I highly recommend Electrolube EML 240 switch cleaner and lubricator for keeping the ancient and original isostat switches working efficiently and noiselessly.

If you get a vintage console up to spec it's easy to keep it there. Another worthwhile mod is to change the creaky old carbon Plessy pots on the 1272's for 25 turn trim pots. You can purchase adaptors to fit them in place of the original pots.

Back to the topic... for a ball park... just add up the cost of all the modules... an empty frame is a boat anchor unless you have the $$$ to fill it.

I read your horror story many years ago, and this is what often happens to these consoles. A friend told me he saw one in the old czechoslovakia, that was taken care of by local techs at the national radio, and that after those many years, just the knobs and the chassis were kept original, everything else under the hood was replaced and 'fixed'.

Unlike with Heritage and SSL, I've never used or heard any Geoff's stuff, but for comments I'm getting from pals at the other side of the pond, I'll add Aurora Audio's very own Sidecar as another great alternative to the vintage Neves.



BTW, an 8038 is on sale for $145k, for those who might be interested in.

Jindrich, I always appreciate your thoughtful posts. Your workflow ergonomics and X-Desk threads definitely influenced our "B" room setup, which has a nice selection of pres and eq's patched to an X-Desk. More recently, we also enjoyed the thread you wrote on studio economics.

That's like asking what's a '63 Mustang in good condition worth? We tend to think of our 8014 more like a '63 Mustang or '58 Corvette. Yes -- there are plenty other fine automobiles available and we "could" drive a newer model vehicle with fuel injection, electronic ignition and a navigation system etc...We are "choosing to drive" a Neve 8014 out of our passion for the original and...we like the way it blows our hair back.

Your "dead stock" Neve 8014 still sounds wicked cool to me. We were fortunate that our 8014 already had the 16 channel monitor section and that the board itself was super clean. The board was previously owned by a very successful recording artist (name not important) who took extremely good care of the console.

Our board's mods -- outlined below are intended to create a bit more utility during tracking and additional flexibility for mixing. The primary mods are:

- Phantom power to each of the 16 channels
- Installed Metering Switching - Selectable between Channels 1-8 or 9-16, Monitor Section 1-8 or 9-15 or the Bus outputs
- Monitor to Mix Modification - Install 16 channels returns, assignable to 4 Bus
- Install Stereo Direct Inject Modification - 2 Channels, assignable to 4 Bus

The extra 16 monitor line inputs give us a total of 32 channels available during mixing. Additionally, the stereo direct injection inputs allows us to connect our BCM 10 sidecar thereby giving a total of 42 channels or 21 stereo stem pairs if desired. There are a few other enhancements, but these are the key mods for our little "summing mixer".

You are fortunate that those mods were in place. I'm having Blakeyboy stop by next month with, hopefully, some drawings I'm missing and to pick his brain. The 16 channel returns and the 2 channel mods would do it for me. In the meantime I'll just struggle along. Sounds like you've got slamming setup. Thanks for the response Tim.

By the way, I've owned this console for about seven years, I've done some recapping, but I can count the problems I've had with it on one hand. It's never stopped a session.

In the past I have made several extra eight channel monitor sections for 8014's generally locating it in the blank area of the fader section.

A lot of these vintage consoles used the mix down section to feed the monitor speakers... it's not too hard to create a new passive monitor path using the original monitor dim relay and monitor level control and connecting it instead to a 31267 input transformer with suitable source switching on the primary.

Then the 1272's or 3405's (or whatever line amp followed the monitor matrix panels) could be reassigned as the stereo bus output.

This especially applied to 8016, 26, and 36 eight track consoles.

Just a quick clarification, the mods were performed recently to my specifications. My unloaded 8014 frame was stock when I purchased it. It did have the 16 channel monitor section which was a key enabler for increasing mix-down input options.

I am not surprised about your 8014's consistent record of service reliability. Once brought up to spec, they are very solid if maintained. Feel free to PM me after you meet with your tech if you want to hear a few more details from our recent experience.

This is a close up of the monitor section of our 8014 before we began making the modifications. There is a picture of our board in post 4 of this thread after we made our mods. Is she one of yours?

I did several as Special Orders Manager at Neve and there is one 8014 out there with 16 track monitoring and 16 track metering using an LED pcb I had made. It was decades ago but I think it went to Amersham Film School or somewhere similarly titled.

Your panel rings a bell... on a regular 8014 the far right channel is rev on monitor send and return. I am wracking my brain to recall what it does on your 9 - 16 panel.

Those panels are not the same size... the one in the fader section is shorter (front to back) and there's less room underneath for the bus bars.

Great to see all the buzz created by Neve's BCM10 MkII announcement. It revived Larry's thread on his original BCM10. I thought it would be fun to bump this Neve 8014 thread with this new pic.

Just bumping this to see if prices have changed at all. Does anybody know the going rate for an 8014 full of 1073's?

Well I never bought the one I was looking at.

I think if anything the need for a 16 plus channel
Neve is diminishing as we get used to the DAW workflow and no one has space or the deep pockets for a monster. Neves are quite large Wo th their largely redundant monitoring sections and producers desks etc.

So if anything I think these smaller footprint ones are becoming more and more desirable. The big ones are taking ages to sell and I think this is a contributing factor now that will prolly see their value increase.

I’ve now got a small Neotek Elan tabletop that I really like and ****e ton of outboard to add some vibez. ?

Well ... I figure a vintage module is roughly £6-7k each now. So that and a frame in. Good nick and that’s prolly about right?
