I just received U47 FET, I was very surprised how good the mic sounds. I was expecting good kick mic but it is in the same ballpark with U47 , m49 , SM204 or vintage U87 for vox!
great!
5 of them ? wow , do you have any left at all ? I presume each one sounded a little different . Also any one know why they stopped making the U47 , the non tube one ?
Neumann has a bad habit of discontinuing the production of their classic mics in favor of newer more technologically advanced models that don't sound as good as the older mics they replaced. They have been doing that for many decades now. Their engineers and management seem to be very stubborn and refuse to even consider any reissues despite the huge money they could make. Maybe they call it pride, but I call it stupidity. With KM 84's selling for $1,500 or more and U47 fet's selling for $4,000, you think they would consider making these again because they could if they wanted to. They still make the capsules and the rest of the parts are available. I can understand them not making mics that use impossible to get parts like VF-14 tubes and AC-701k tubes or transformers that have not been made for 50 years, but none of these things apply with a KM84 or a U47 fet.
Thanks JImkeperkins , I am surprised with all the demand the don't make it seeing as all the parts are still available . So there must be someone who makes an exact replica then . Any insights ?
I own U47, Voxorama 47,Siemens SM204, M49, C12a, couple of U87 and really the U47 fet is great..
I would be curious to know where the Voxorama falls in relation to the U47 and U47FET, especially if you are using Andreas' FET device. I am using that along with a Neumann K47 capsule in his mike.
I have FET device, and if I will count it in percentage.. U47 and Voxorama U47 is 3 % difference / both have a M7 capsule/...U47 FET is 8 % difference to both of them.. I cannot say any of them is closer to U47 fet..

Carloff, a Neumann representative told me a few month ago, that Neumann bring out in the late autumn a new model of the legendary U47fet.
A high-priced version of the old U47fet.
Probably it will be a splendid mic... I'm sure... !
Why should it cost 3000 if a 87 (far more complex mic) costs 2500? They should sell them for 1999EUR (thats about the used price for one in good condition) and they would make a lot of money.

When the U47 FET came out, the studio at which I did many sessions got one of the first ones down here in FL. As a big Neumann fan, I wanted to hear it on a vocal we were doing that day.....
My engineer smiled and said 'You're not going to like it..." and we put it up.
It sounded like a sock was over the mic. It was just terrible for vocals, at least on this female singer we used.
I tried it on my own voice and the 414 they had killed it, as did their 87. It was relegated to low stuff and never brought out again.
Now it's a "classic" mic.
Amazing.
And you know I don't doubt that it's good, many people do love it. But I wonder we just got a bad one or something...?

I'm kinda with you.imo always a very nice utility mic.never my fav old neumann.used it a lot on gtr cabs.front kit.sometimes vx,rooms.worked fine but no magic .ime always found 87's/89's more interesting/useful.
honestly I've gotten just as good or imo better results w/ the Bock ifet.love that mic.
It has almost beggared belief that Sennheiser have failed to bring back their classic Neumann microphones in one form or other, while others profit. Who wouldn't want km84's or a U47 (albeit with a different tube) with Neumann badges? Gefell have been remaking their CMV563. Telefunken, a company who genuinely have NOTHING to do with the original trading company, are knocking out copies that people are happy to spill their guts for. How many people have Fleas, Wunders, etc etc. How they can't see they have a damaged brand but the easiest of all fixes. Classic microphones made to spec by the classic name. Hopefully this is just the first of many. It's been such a missed opportunity, it's genuinely baffling. It's like they have absolutely no understanding of branding - in 2014 - it's close to unbelievable. They'd be shorter run, expensive microphones they could sell expensively, but the company could rightly trade on that name for another 100 years if they made something good again. Remaking the original U87 would be so easy for them it's almost laughable.
