Are those Fet47? What about OH? Any room mics?
I'm not 100% sure which mics we had on the kit but I'll do my best to remember, I can probably find some other pics at home that show more clearly the room and you'll be able to tell me!
We recorded the drums at a place here in Melbourne called Soundpark so although I'm mixing and recording the rest of the instruments (and playing the drums), the drums were recorded by the studio owner Idge.
To the best of my recollection the room duties were performed by two U87's which you can see to the left of the top photo (really blurry), there were also two Royer mics at the front and back of the room and above the drums there were two black mics square shaped mics with a really heavy grille on them, I've completely forgotten the brand but I remember him saying they were british. (Really boxy, thick sound)
The one that you are saying is a Fet47 was a mic we placed to pick up a good amount of kick and snare that I wanted so I'd have something to really crush in the mix and just bring up underneath for a bit of that dirty, Kinks type of distortion (evident on that roll before the outro).
Snare is a 57 just on top and toms are the Sennheisers (MD 421's?) Kick is an AKG D112 and another Neumann in a cradle (once again, ashamed I don't know what it is!)
These all went into a myriad of outboard stuff that I'm not totally sure of as I was behind the drums when it was all being set, but basically think of every bit of slutty gear that you could want and this guy had it, from a great mixture of Neve and API pre's into old Pultec EQ's and all the stock compressors.
Nothing was pushed particularly hard because a lot of time was spent making sure that the actual drums sounded good in the room and the mics were placed very carefully, lots of running between the control room and drum room.
Back at my place on Pro Tools, the main changes have just been crushing a few mics with compression and digital tape saturation to enhance the sustain and the 'vintage' feel and also just a few EQ changes to get the whole thing sitting right with where the instruments will be going. I've also manually put a kick sample in that I've brought up slightly underneath for a bit more consistency on the bottom end as it's a dancy kind of beat.
It's been fun so far, we're trying to keep down our costs as the band is just a group of friends and we're just doing it for our own personal enjoyment now so it's as much for me about playing great music as it is learning about how to improve on my recording and mixing techniques which I have completely neglected for the last 10 or so years. I used to love it when I was really young, and now I'm enjoying it even more as I keep working at it and building up my own little setup. This site has had a lot to do with that.. read about stuff all day and I just can't wait to get home and try it out!
