I tried using my set of LCR 300 ASL as speakers freestanding, and was disappointed to find that there was absolutely no bass, despite their claims. They sounded, and measured, very thin. These must be soffit mounted to be of any use in stock configuration.
But I was committed to using them as free-standing speakers.
What I did to solve the problem was to build new cabinets, keeping the original air volume and speaker alignment of the original cabinets. Keep in mind that a single ATC cabinet is actually 2, divided internally; as a single woofer cabinet and a single 3-way cabinet, in one. By building separate cabinets (using thicker MDF than stock), and placing one on top of the other as separates, I was able to couple the cabinets to the floor and get a nice, fat, flat frequency response down to 24Hz. And, a nice bonus is that they are slimmer, which is nice for the center channel, and easier to move.
The ATC soundstage is truly awesome. Those midrange drivers are incredible, and are really the heart-and-soul of the system.
They are highly regarded, along with PMC, in the TV/Film-scoring community. So having them in-house makes everyone feel comfortable.
I also really like the OWR speakers. A lot. But, they are quite different, and not as well known in my specific field of recording, which tends to be very conservative and resistant to new things. So it was good business, for me, to stick with the ATCs.
But the OWRs really do kick-ass, so I'd have a listen, first.
