i build small project studios, mostly for clients who come to sing or play at my place.

so heres this client who says " i want ks digital monitors for my studio", and i say "impossible, if i have'nt heard of a professional studio monitor, it does'nt exist".

i apologise for the above statement. I have since realized that theres plenty... just too much that i don't know about who is building what. Theres plenty of these european companies that don't have much global visibility, building very high quality stuff... like psi audio, me-geithan etc.
firstly mike... that is pure heresay. Everybody knows somebody who regrets buying something... genelec, adam, dynaudio... you name it and somebody hates it. Subsequent to my initial post i actually got to hear the ks digital monitors in action at a local studio... they sounded absolutely fabulous... you'd never guess that theres a digital crossover in there. Precise and balanced. But then... i only heard them once in one particular unfamiliar environment, and one is impressionable. As for me, i never installed a pair because they are too damn expensive.

lastly mike, if you visit their website, you will see that they have nothing whatsoever to do with PA systems, i think you are confusing with sls audio.

Au Contraire...while PA systems are permitted to change bandwith to protect themselves...its not correct in control rooms...and drivers thermalling on and off is frowned upon too

There are different models of studio monitors from KSdigital. The ADM2 is a really, really good one. Very transparent - sometimes it reminds me on electrostatic monitors but without their flaws.
The ADM2 has a perfect impulse response, maybe that reminds me on electrostats.
Very accurate sound but not lifeless. Uncolored.
Depth of image is great.

Worth a try.

Don´t know the smaller models like ADM3 from own experience but the ADM2 is really great.

I have dynaudio bm6, mackie 624 - both with a sub- I have worked on ns-10's many years as well as my favourite so far (main bigs) M 3000 Tannoy's. I miss them the most. Ever since leaving them I've been looking for the right thing to replace them. I have gone trough every possible combination of mid-grade monitors...

They are almost everything I love about Tannoys. Reavealing, annoying a bit, soooo deep.... For the size - where do you get the lows as firm as that???

Just test these babies out, if you have the chance. I intend to keep them for 2-3 weeks beofre I buy.

After that confirmation that I do buy them I will sell my brand new bm6's as well as 624's - anyone intrested in Scandinavia & Baltics? pm me.

Cool to see studios use it - it completely fits my taste - as well as sounds good too. Just yesterday a colleuage invited me to listen to his B&W 801's - while it was certainly a really amazing joyrney - coming back to the KS digital was not dissapointing at all. Just a tad bit less depth... but the midworks and midlows are sooooo cool. High end is not harsh, yet you know when something's wrong. The firmness of the lows and low mids is amazing. Have already done a couple of good mixes on them. Considering buying them (using them with a sub (crossed at 50 hz) -- I need to try out the bigger models - although ADM 4 already totally satisfies me 95%.

KS has a strong presence in the european market and only recently have made moves to come out to larger markets like the US.

To answer the question about KS being a PA and a studio monitor company. Yes KS is both but... under two names (KS-Audio=PA, KS-Digital=Studio Monitor) and are effective two companies are there are two designers behind each. PA side was first and had already created a German market. Then the studio monitor side funded by the cheif designer, was built from the ground up by a second designer and some its technology was then adapted to the PA side. Though with similar philosophies in mind the two divisions have different goals.

I have been working for KS for over 2 years now and have effective showcase the ADM-4s, ADM-1s, and ADM-2s to hundereds of composers, engineers, and producers here in the Los Angeles area. I can tell you one thing with confidence, NO ONE was disappointed with the sound. In fact, we've had extensive A-B tests with Genelec, ADAM, Quested, B&K, Dynaudio, etc. and those who were there for these tests ALL found that KS had the most resolution, and accuracy in phasing. Several composers such as Michael Levine (Cold Case, Close to Home, etc.) and artists such as Stevie Wonder had purchase them since.

Here is a little information about the ADM-2, ADM-1, and the ADM-0 digital monitors. First off, they are all digital monitors that accept analog and AES/EBU inputs. They use a propietery technology called Firtec (Finite Impulse Response). Without technical details, the technology is quite simple. Each individual speaker's drivers impulse response (how it colors the sound) is taken. The measurement is stored in the DSP that is within the monitor so the speaker effectively knows how the drivers color the sound and is compensated before being amplified. So several things are perfected in this process. Of course equalization, but more importantly (a factor that many speaker companies don't speak of) Phasing. So this results in a very detailed, spacious, and true reference as the DSP is monitoring the input signal and the out put to the drivers. So once you have placed the monitors into the position you can record your own impulse response, send it to the engineers of KS and they will then correct the room too! Not just EQ and phasing! Once you experience this, this will blow you mind.. you will perceive a sound field not just left and right, much like a surround system. Beyond that, once the speakers are tuned you will realize what it means to be a true reference. No more guessing and having 3 pairs of monitors and a boombox. I've mixed tons of projects on the KS and tested the mixes in cars, clubs, boomboxes, computer speakers and can say with confidence that these are some monitors that you truely trust to be real world compatible.

In any case, don't take my word or techincal specs to believe how amazing these speakers are. Come to my facility in Silverlake and hear KS in surround, or go to SAE in Hollywood and experience them there in the ICON room. I can even bring them to your studio and let you play with them for a while.

They build some really amazing studio-monitors. This has nothing to do with PA. The linemasters and ADM20 are incredible accurate speakers.

afaik ks is the professional outlet of two guys who bought the german active hifi-speaker company backes & müller a few years ago. they have a solid track record in the pa-field and also ‘authored' speakers for other companies.

backes & müller is audiophile stuff. founded sometime in the early seventies they were one of the shops that early on tried to sell active speakers to the audiophile crowd. the brand is somewhat 'cult' in germany and has loyal followers. their concepts where definitely more sane than what competitors did in the same field: active speakers, servo-controlled bass and mid-range-woofers, room-correction eq's etc.

quality control issues, bad marketing and lack of distribution had the company go bankrupt a couple of times between 1980 and around 2000. since these guys - forgot their names - took over they seem to do better and brought out a couple of interesting new products. their room-correction software uses the same principles that k&h uses in their O500 monitors. they also have a patented some new tweeter design that seems to be quite cool.

last not least they also upped their prices and their flagship is a solid 100k euros.

but then every audiophile company did that in the bubble of the past years.

there seems to be some overlap between the ks products and the b&m products. they probably just re-brand and sell the studio stuff somewhat cheaper and without the pretty veneers.

i've used many different studio monitors in the past and I've never come across anything as pristine and accurate as the ks digital c5 tiny's. to all the haters ....don't knock it til you try it!

Fascinating stuff. I'm curious then as to why the stated specs are +/-3db for the freq response on the website then, if each individual one is measured in an anechoic chamber and compensated for electronically, wouldn't the tolence be much tighter than +/-3db?.

Hi. I am late on this thread. I recently purchased KS digital speakers. I believe ADM-12. It is their larger 3 way. I compared them for weeks against everything I could demo to compare. There were some speakers that I would have liked to hear but could not get demos. That was a factor, KS would let me demo as long as I wanted and encouraged side by side tests. A-B listening allowed easy comparison and is much more personal. I love my KS speakers. Every instrument sits where it should in mix and all instruments very real and transparent sounding. You could hear different reverb tails, and all aspects of mix with precise detail yet natural. I do not work for KS or affiliated in any way. I am just very satisfied with my decision. I really want to hear their coaxiels as a secondary monitor. I have not used support but so far response for anything has been great. I had never heard of KS digital before but I am very happy with my selection.

A friend of mine just started working with KS-Audio in Tampa FL and sent me out a pair of C5's. Upon first checking them out I wondered how clear they could sound with just a 5" driver. They were absolutely astonishing in their clarity and detail. As a user of many of the $500-$1,000 per pair studio monitors, ie KRK, Mackie, DynAudio, Adam, M-Audio, etc.... The C5's were like taking cotton out of the ears by comparison. The C8's advertise an extended low range down to 48Hz. I'd recommend them!
