i just compared once v72a against a tube tech .
i took the v72s , i like their sound , but i hate the inflexibility .
i cant afford the mod to make it a monster , maybe someday .
i would really think about what you wanna use it for .
if you have a lot of pres already you can add those anytime .
if its your main setup , i would care about that you can do a lot with the pres you pick . using vintage pres with modern mics can be painful especially if it comes to leveling . just my opinion .
Hi Mike, I have two V76 that I love to death.
But I have a level match problem.
I go from the V76 straight into protools.
But I never have the right input level. either too high, or to low.
How to deal with that ?
The V76 is beyond a shadow of a doubt, my favorite pre. They are a pain in the rear to work on but are worth it. I record all my vocals, bass and electric guitar thru mine.
I own v72 and it rocks!! the other vintage pres i use (much more that the 72) are tele v676 they are not tube but they are absolutly amazing for in your face sound I have 4 of them with fallowing ser. nr.!
try to get a couple.
What is the difference of the sound of the V72 and solid state V676 compared to the V76. I own a pair of V76's and like I said they are my favorite pre by far. I'm thinking of getting more of the buxom German babes.
I don't have much expirence with v76 but I can hear the diffrence between my v72 and v676 which is some how hard to discribe in words, the v676 is somehow more solide and hard the mids just sound solid and impresive it is also fast than the v72, the v72 as nicer lows and nice tuby top.
I have a pair of V72's and a pair of V77's, I love them. If anything tube sounds better I'd sure like to hear about it, but so far these are the best I"ve heard. I have a pair of V276's as well but they sound totally different, not in a bad way, they just don't sound like V72's. I"ve got a 676 and a pair of 372's here as well but I haven't found the time to rack them yet.
If you can find one, a V76 that has not been rebuilt will cost about a grand. Re built modules could go as high as $1500. Then if you want to buy a custom rack, that's another grand. It's a spendy proposition...
Here's my pair. I recapped them and the built the rack myself.
