You're probably right - but I just wasn't blown away with the UA LA2A...I'm going to eventually try out a CL1B and a Manley ELOP...oh, and a Sta-Level. I have no problem laying down the dough if I feel like it's something that is making an objective difference, but I just didn't think the LA2A did that. Oh well, guess that's subjective.

I've tried the MC77 and it's on my list to buy. You should keep the Distressor, it's like the swiss army knife of compressors, it may not have a lot of character but it sure works when you need to control the dynamics and use for effect.

Yeah I like the vocal sound I'm getting without compression, I just don't like the type of compression. I tried all the settings on the distressor and there is no setting that just stands out and actually makes the vox sound that much better, though it's great for controlling peaks so I can crank the Pacifica. but when I use the bombfactory 1176 on the vox, this is the type of comp that WORKS, keeping aside the fact that it's a plugin. I'm using a Peluso 22 47LE with a Pacifica, wierd the guy that commented below you is using this too haha I think this is a popular chain around here!... I've also got a u87ai and SM7 to choose from for vox, I find the 47LE with the Pacifica is hard to beat though.

So anybody can suggest a million and one comps and it still might not be what you are looking for.

Maybe look into a different mic which will make a bigger difference on vocal tracks.

And me choosing a UaLa2a over a Sta-Level for tracking a vocal works for me and that is why i state IMO. But i don't track the same all the time with the same chain. I got different things to try on different sources. Be it an La2a,Sta-Level, Purple audio,Neve 2254,Neve 33609,Distressor,Focusrite,Vac rac, Tubetech, Manley Vari-Mu, Elop, SSL, DBX 160vu,La3a and nothing. That's what good about having different choices.

The same with a narrower dynamic range and some added mojo... Therefore better.

I think what you should consider is that you need more than one compressor. A good compressor is one that works and all that are mentioned do just that. So build up your compressor collection.

IMO compressors are for imparting a sound; riding or automating a fader is for narrowing dynamic range.

This is highend forum...You have to have both...Keep it and keeping adding to your collection...All the cheap stuff i had laying around my studio i sold..I have tlm 103 left..nobody seems to like them

You know, Mark Warren and I A/Bed a LA2A and a Tube-Tech CL 1B and we found them to be vastly different from each other. Not enough time to tell which we'd prefer, but they definitely sounded different. I've always heard they were similar. It ain't so.

Also agree. Sold mine.......................just doesn't work for me.

I have four MC77's and they usually sit on guitars and bass, occasionally vocals. Versatile, "must have" compressors...........a little edge that works for guitars.

heres my limited edition mc77, I got it this week and I LOVE it big time over the 6176, I use it on all vocals now.

Man that's pretty. Let me know, how do these differ from the UA 1176LN? Curious.

A/Bed those, too. Better top end on the MC77. Also, true bypass with the Purple.

Are you saying that if you were using a TG-1 you'd run it in THD mode and then do the rest by hand?

Waht about somehting like the Pendulum ES-8 or 6386 where you can set it to no compression, but get the tone?

Look at the color above, compared to one at the Purple website............quite different.

They are normally a pinkish purple, and that one looks to be an indigo purple.
