i use mine with a Great River for vox. Hit the Loading and impedance switches for a bit more "shine".

1200 certainly isn't a luxuary budget ... maybe a single channel.

How about something 'lunch boxy' ? Buzz Audio has the elixir which is based on the ma2.2, which should make it pretty neutral but very musical sounding. And I know for sure that the ma2.2 can handle any type of microphone like the best.

You need one good mic pre type for the entire record.

Microphones, or instruments, don't "determine" mic pres.

So the answer is: buy the mic pre you like and you can afford and then use it with every mic and every instrument... just as though you had a console full of that one type.

I like mine through any of the pres I have and the list includes UA, Chandler, Mercury, Shadow Hills ect. As posted above, any good quality pre should yeild good quality results as I have not found the Gefell UM92 to be very picky about which pre it goes through.

agreed. mine sounds good through just about everything. it can be a little too sibilant our of a brighter pre like a daking or tg2.

Can you show me with tones that a Daking is a "brighter pre"?

veeeeery old thread.. anyway..
If I was in your shoes I'd try to get ahold of a couple of contenders, test them in your place and keep what you like best.
even if you have some shipping fees to cover, the experience will be priceless, and you you get to know what works best with YOUR source in YOUR room.

with that said I'd probably suggest slightly different options.. but this is based on my taste..

I'd probably would suggest the Gyraf G25 vocalshape, which is a great sounding channelstrip, very fast to use and can be incredibly useful..

for your other options I'd look into an Avedis MA5 (and a Link Audio Design X530 lunchbox) AND if you can find one a Crane Song Flamingo or a Dave Hill Europa 1 preamp..

very good sounding options, very cleverly designed and the Europa could really change what you get out of your mic.

P.S.: any of the options will work well with the Gefell UM92s which is a high quality unit, it really depends what do YOU want from a preamp.. and if you want to "tame" certain aspects (to a certain extent) of that Gefell or not..
