Just quickly passing by to mention this old gem - Native Instruments Solid Bus Com. I tested several options today on a bit of a strange mix - with wide backing vocals coming in at some point and pushing the guitars and drums behind - so a bit of a challenging situation for the bus compressor.
I tested the SSL Native Bus, the IK Bus Comp and the Glue against the UAD API2500 that was originally in this mix. At some point, I decided to bring in the NI's Bus Comp and it fared better than the SSL and IK..... I was actually doing this to see if I need the SSL Native Bus comp, but I think that I don't - at the end, I liked it the least from this bunch.
Wondering if UAD are ever going to make their SSL Bus comp native....

it would be sooo good if it had internal oversampling options. still, for non Reaper users there is Metaplugin for such use cases

Yeah, it would have a great contender here as well, but I probably didn't want to get another demo.
I know it from a friend who had used and then replaced it for good with either the UAD or the bx townhouse IIRC.

It all depends on the material. To me, that's still a strength of the hardware: maybe not always being the best, but never bad.

I like D, F, I the best. On balance probably F at the top of the list. The weightiest for me, nice snap and liked what it was doing to the toms.

They all do the job. E was the first one that sounded meaningfully different to me, and not that much. I liked what it did to the snare. I and J also stood out to me, but not enough to confidently call them inherently "better" in general.

Hi everybody. Don’t know if it’s the right thread so, I tried to tell what’s the issue.
I recently A-B tested (it was a blind test) SSL G comp (mk3) and Wes audio Dione (VCA); I tested even Wes audio Rhea (varimu) cause I ‘m looking for a bus comp mainly for my my mix bus, but even other duties. So I’m VCA oriented, but who knows.
So the issue is that I’d pick the original SSL track, over the Dione, cause of “that” sound, with more movement and mid-depth (ssl) over little bigger stereo imaging (dione). I like that subtle vintage taste, in general. But I’m a little bit disappointed to go with ssl products, I don’t know why, cause I love ssl sound, ever loved it, but last “mk-s” don’t get my confidence. So I’m wondering how does sound a mk1 or mk2 compared with the last mk3. My “gear provider” told me that mk1/mk2/and mk3 are respectively the revision of 4000 , 6000 and 9000 style of g comp. Is it true or verifiable/hearable? Does anybody ever compared them?

[I want to be clear, I don’t want to offend Ssl brand, I respect everyone’s business and choices. Just I would like to be sure of the sound I’m going to give to my tracks, so if Ssl products “of the past” sounds better for my productions I’d go with them]
