Not exactly. The sequencers so far appear to exactly like the Monotribe in which it operates on a single 16 step pattern that's continuously looped. The specs show that up to eight different patterns can be saved, but there's no song mode of any sort where you can chain things together. A few people have already made comparisons of these to the Electribes, the TR-606 and even the Korg KPR-77, but like I said, there doesn't appear to be any kind way to chain patterns together to compose full songs like you could do on those units.
So knowing all that, it's good to sit and figure what exactly the MIDI IN function will do to help make these things even more powerful for full song creation. Personally, I don't see it as side stepping anything. I have the Monotribe and jam out on it quite a bit, but when it comes to sitting down and actually recording a song, things get complicated and I have to cut and paste all the audio together. With MIDI, it would solve that problem completely. Even though MIDI might reduce these to being nothing more than sound modules for some people, if they sound good, I see no problems with that considering how cheap the price is. Looking at the Volca Bass unit alone, $150 for a 3 VCO mono synth is totally unheard of right now, even in the realm of sound modules. A Mopho module alone goes for more than twice the cost.
