There's an ARP Axxe on Ebay right now for 1000 US$ - have the prices for Axxes gone through the roof in general, or is this one of those Ebay sellers on crack?

nope, its not mine.
but the last few axxes weve sold (for around that price) were refurbished units and not your typical "works fine" (=probably has undisclosed problems) auctions or CL sales. in the end, we invested a lot of time and money into them. if you consider our initial cost for the item + the cost of professional packing and shipping to get them to us + the amount of time and money spent servicing them, thoroughly cleaning them, meticulously testing and retesting them, marketing them, packing and shipping them, etc, and then the fact that, as a business, we pay taxes on our profits (as opposed to the typical private seller who often doesnt), it wasnt really worth it from a business perspective.

I think they were a hair undervalued for awhile really. Especially to get one with sliders replaced, which those sliders are fairly expensive themselves... I personally wouldn't pay $1000 for one, but I've got one already...*shrugs* Still half an Odyssey, not your usual cheapo mono.

i guess you can call it the odysseys little brother, but its really nowhere near as powerful. id recommend an axxe only to those wanting to make relatively simple analog monosynth sounds. to get deeper sounds, youll generally want 2 oscillators, oscillator sync, a ring modulator, all of which are found in the odyssey.

recent uk prices have gone up a bit on Axxes - shame I really wanted a lil bit of ARP magic in my studio on the cheap. I think AXXE leads sound cool.

Oddy's are still mad expensive, strange in way as ARP 2600 are starting to come down in price, maybe due to their size...

really? They seem to average around $1,500 on ebay.

I think they are a bit more than that in UK, closer to £2,000

where as I've seen a few 2600's for under 2k strangely.

Don't forget about the Solus, which is much closer in features to the Odyssey than the Axxe is (but at prices typically not too much higher than the Axxe).

If I remember correctly.. the Solus has a bit of a range issue.. can't get that low.

I agree it's pricey, but more astounding is $2,500 for a tb-303 which cannot touch an AXXE in warmth and presence.

I got a MKI Axxe about 2 years ago...This thing may be limited, but it OOOZES personality and has a huge sonic footprint!

I get around it by multitracking it and detuning one of the oscillators.

Glad to hear you do this too. It is really not that hard to record twice adjusting the tune knob a handful of clicks left, then right. We are spoiled in the age of softsynths with unlimited oscillators and polyphony, and it can sound great.

Solus fan here. In place of a pitch wheel, the Solus has a pot. In mine, when it's fully counterclockwise (? English?) It is a perfectly tuned 1 octave below. Unlike a wheel, the pot stays there, no spring, so you can play in the bass register and tweak the panel without problem.
