I found that I tend to take Chorus for granted since it's built in to many synths.

But I always find that limiting.
I'd like to find a good chorus for all of my synths. Mainly because I can have a variable rate.. instead of I or II

Looking more for that New Order/Cure sound. For a guitar reference.
I don't know if that means analog or digital.. have no idea where to start.

Peter Hook used an Electro-Harmonix Clone Theory (the original one). I have one of the modern ones and it's ok but awfully noisy.

The chorus pedal that I use for guitars/bass/synths is the Analog Man Chorus which is basically an improved Electro-Harmonix Clone Chorus. It sounds awesome. I have the version with stereo outs and some of the other options (chorus depth switch, mix pot, etc.)

If I don't use the analog chorus I typically use the Axe FX, Kurzweil Rumour, or the TC Chorus-Delay. As far as digital goes there are a million multi-effect boxes that have chorus available. Some sound nicer than others.

Is there any EH effect that isn't noisy?
I dunno cause I've never owned one... but have used many.

Would the small clone be a better idea?

The Analog Man is much better than the Small Clone IMO (and it's not noisy) but it's expensive. The Small Clone is around $90, the Analog Man is $225 before options. The Small Clone isn't nearly as noisy as the Clone Theory, by the way.

if u have a UAD card , the Boss CE-1 works very well with synths .

The best chorus for me would be a roland jazz chorus 120 amp.
Probably the same price as a vintage Boss CE-1, only a bit bulkier than a stompbox.

What about the EHX Small Clone?

Boss Dimension C is my go to pedal for chorus, followed by the Analog Man stereo chorus NWSooner posted. If you go with the Analog Man, make sure you get the depth switch. It makes it a lot more versatile.

Can't beat some classic Roland/Boss chorus action. I use either a CE-1 or Dimension C (DC-2) on my synths, both sound great!

Elkorus

I have an old analo rock man stereo chorus. Its awesome but might not be what you are looking for. It makes things ultra wide without any obvious movement. Love it.

I have the JC120 and it is exactly what robert smith used often times on his earlier stuff. However if I were picking up a Chorus pedal I would look at the
Fromel Seraph, or the Strymon Ola. Both are awsome. The ola will offer more possibilities and is digital the Seraph.. whoo swweeet Takes me right into Cocteau Twins territory.

Dimension D

I've been going back and forth about whether or not to get a Dimension D or a Fromel Seraph in stereo with all the bells and whistles. Anyone care to comment on the difference between them?

If you want a lot of flexibility and are not put off by the idea of doing some patching to create your own effects, the Nord MicroModular costs about as much as a really good boutique chorus pedal. And it can do six choruses in parallel, stereo resonant flangers into dual stereo choruses, choruses through phasers in series, pretty much any kind of chorus effect you can think up. You can use the ready-to-go chorus modules or roll your own using the delay modules & mixers & LFOs etc.

Dimension C and Analogman Stereo chorus. All the way.

To be honest my Ola doesn`t do that much for synth`s imo. I think its much better suited for guitar or other "thinner" sound-sources. Its more of a "shimmer" kinda chorus, not thick and warm. Nice and clean. The chorus on the 301 however...


Anybody wanna trade an Ola for something ?

If Nord had seen the opportunity for smaller and rack modular effects units (as I mailed them 10 years ago, including guitar amp modelling), they would be the go-to modern effect producer by now, IMHO.

What are the pros to using pedals instead of modules with synths for BBD stuff like chorus or flanger? Does an Analogman or EHX sound so good it's worth working around the impedance mismatches, rather than just using a Boss CE-300 or similar rack unit?

Especially if you're going to talk about tolerating different levels & impedance, gotta be one of the best.

And the midi sync sure is nice. . . not to mention cv options, and ability to get negative feedback. . .

Man, I would love a Clusterflux, but I just can't justify the cost for now. I have major GAS for one though. It would fit really well next to my MF-102 and MF-103.

Synthoma Elkorus - circuit from Eminent Solina and 310U. i can set it up as simple one lfo chorus, or as complex ensemble and all sorts of variations since you have control over three separate delay lines and two LFOs. most luxurious BBD modation device i've run into.

Roland/Boss CE-1, CE-2 are classic. had CE-1 on tryout and it does have sorta gloomy sad sound unlike anything else, especially liked the vibrato mode. but ultimately i thought i could do without it, and felt that another Roland chorus i already had sounded more to my liking.. which brings me to:

Boss DM-300 in chorus mode. limited as you only get to control the intensity. but what a beautiful liquidy syrupy tone. what i like about it compared to choruses that Roland put on its synths like ju60/106 etc, your dry signal still sounds like it, the chorus does not overpower the character of your tone, yet makes it wonderfuly organic. especially nice on polyanalogs like jupiters. many pedals i tried just pale in comparison.

MXR126 - a flanger, but it can be setup to do chorus as it has control over center frequency and wide depth range, feedback polarity etc. famous detuned/doubled clean guitars of turn of the decade 70/80s.. peter gabriel, duran, cramboy and 4ad stuff..postpunkish/dark/gothic... it also was also packed into a vertical half rack unit called Auto-Flanger. this was everywhere in big studios during 80s and much later.

Anyone try out this guy yet? This looks really interesting, supposed to emulate a Juno-106.
