Ha, nah. Just get the JV80-WiFi card, connect it (with a usb c to usb 2.0 cable) to a computer and load on the soundsets pretty much. All done through a browser (entering an I.P. address and navigate around all the options). There's a link found to source the soundsets at the webpage Evil D. linked just above.

So far as I'm aware you can't customise patches or mix up soundsets, but can load any soundset you like on to one.

I received my card a day ago and have now tested in slots D and E of the XP-30 along with an existing Vintage Synth card. Both slots worked great. No issues at all.

I do think it needs to be manual, but just more robust. The rotary switch seen in Red Hector's post above is bulky but I have one of these cards too and definitely feels more mechanically sturdy.

.. a little separate control board with momentary buttons or a rotary that sticks to the front panel somewhere, with a little pinhole to run wires through?

The downside of this rotary switch is that it can be very hard to see the tiny number in the selected bank 'window'. I need a small light source and my glasses on to read them. A hex led display would be much nicer.

...but obviously would drive the cost up.

Cost vs usability/reliability is something that should be considered.
If cost is the only consideration, go with switches.
In a typical dimly lit setup, the tiny recessed numbers on the rotary switch are likely to be a regular annoyance. Also, where there are twin data/PCM slots, like on the JD-990, an inserted PCM card obstructs reading of the data card bank number in certain positions.

Fortunately, I tend to use mine from the right side, which expose the back of the PCB. Yet, the switches are feeling cheap.

A couple DIP or +/- micro-switches on a small deported board that could be glued or fixed under one of the rack screw on the face-plate would help. It would be connected with a detachable flat cable and, if worn out, could be easily replaced without risk for the main PCB.

Hmm.. From those photos, the PCM cards don't appear to protrude as much as I thought they would (I don't have one yet). It is hard to know how much they would block view of bank numbers on a rotary switch. Are all 990 PCM cards the same length?

All SO-JD80-0x PCM cards seems shorter than their PN-JD80-0x patch counterparts.

Was planning on getting three more, but alas I seem to have an issue with my 2080's card slots (seems I'm not the only one from this post) either.

It's only accessing slots A,C,F,H, and is sometimes showing cards duplicated or in the wrong slots too..

(Have done the obvious, new battery / factory reset)





If I put any four boards in A,C,F,H it works, but as you can see it thinks I have multiple copies of boards in some slots..

I suspect it's an addressing issue, so could be as simple as the board ribbon cables, but I'll investigate further and report back if I get anywhere.

And more has arrived, but I'll be on a off-road trip from tomorrow, to avoid any PayPal shenanigans I'll update the inventory and send the mail when I'm back on 6th.


I've replied you in the other post. Let's keep the geeky discussion in the geeky section. Try re-soldering CN9 on EXP board. I've seen some cold solder joints on Roland devices from that era.

I had similar problem as well, no boards would show in my XP50. Fixed it as mentioned earlier in the thread.

And there I'd been happy as Larry without a care in the world, then I saw the most recent post about a 2080 glitching out with a card. As it goes I'd slapped whatever soundsets on a couple of jv80wifi's and whapped them in a 2080 without even testing them in the unit and forgetting about that - until just now! Been so busy touring the world with my band (ok, that's not true), but silly ole me hey! Anyway, no probs with the 2 cards it seems (installed in slots F & G). Added a pic. to this post showing installed cards in a 2080 on the system info page thing. Cheers

Edit: Oh, just remembered it's a HW Ver 1.0 and 1.2 installed in the 2080 I think. May come back later with anything relevant if need be.

Anyone had any luck getting custom .wavs into a JD990 yet? (not talking about the roland images, obvs)

I'm experimenting with the sr-jv wifi & the Python scripts. I found the (E-mu) Proteus 1 banks on archive and went on to convert them into SF2. All good so far. Ran the Python-scripts and ended up again with an 8MB binary. Perfect!

Now i have two choices: I can either flash this using the Sector101 Romulator (which is a great piece of hardware, but requires me to pull the unit from the rack and remove the card) or the sr-jv wifi (just direct flashing using wifi). So far i have tried the latter (because i'm lazy), but...

I don't know at all if the wifi variant is as "true" to its original as the Sector101 is. I will spend some time the upcoming weekend to re-arrange the rack a bit so that the 5080 becomes more accessible for removing the expansions.

But i need some advice from anyone here who has tried various ways to flash both the wifi & Romulator. Are they the same from that perspective, or could it be so that it can fail on the wifi-ditto and succeed on Romulator?

Flashing the custom (Proteus) binary ends up with me seeing it on the 5080 info-screen (again as "sr-jv80-32 Cust1") but its impossible to select voices or even waveforms from it as trying to select anything onboard will basically end up with the machine just skipping the card completely (going from int, xp-a/b/c, skipping d (where the card sits), etc)

Also tried this with just three small drum-samples that i prepared as an SF2 file and the outcome was exactly the same as above.

Just to mention the WIFI card is happy as Larry in my XV-3080 in slot A, i have an SRX in slot E.

Well the firmware won't do anything to the BIN file uploaded, as mentioned before, it just write the firmware to the flash. I've tried the Cus99 image by PythonBlue with the Wi-Fi card and it works fine so I suppose a correctly constructed custom ROM would work. Maybe someone who's experienced in authoring the custom ROMs can chime in here.

Would it be possible for you to send a copy of the BIN file that you created to me so that I can test it?

how is the XV-3080 vs a JV-1080? (having seen the prices of XV-5080 heh) (not that i'm going any further down that road)

I've not got much 1080 experience (I had the 880 for a while though, that machine sounded beautifully haunted haha) but both the 1080 & 3080 are 32Khz-based (apparently) and share the same screen size so I imagine it would be pretty similar? Of course the 3080 has over 1000 waves, including a bunch originally from the JD-990, and a handy smart media card reader. Mine came with a 64MB card which is a lot of space for patches.

Although, of course, most of the JV/XV weird magic comes from ringmod/booster & FXM (I'm currently filming a demo vid!) the 3080's new effects are a huge part of the draw for me too. Here are some highlights:

Formant Filter, an Extra Ring Modulator with volume follower, Reverse Delay, LOFI Noise (with radio detune!) and a handy Speaker Simulator. I hear the XV5080 has even more effects (COSM) so maybe one day I'll check that out.

£230-ish I paid? No brainer. I'll likely sell my XV2020 now, which has the extra waves but not the extra effects, and needs a computer editor.

find a cheap proteus2000 - or 2500, that looks like a monster - it's fun, for a 1U rompler rack, with arp & seq per patch, 4 banks of user memory. more 'cinematic' sound @ 44.1khz than the prior Proteii (39khz) and would be a great companion to JV for large scoring situation probably (with 2x 3 stereo outputs).

c'mon Connor, make us some wifi Proteus ROMs ! ;-)

I’ve done a comparison of a few Proteus line modules now and find that all of them have their place in my studio. The UltraProteus is king in some ways, many filter types, lots of cool spectral reverb effects, and the ability to offset ROM start points.

The Proteus 2000 series I have (2000, Mo’Phatt, Xtreme Lead) all have cool and very usable waveforms, but what I love is the weird faux-modular patching and SLOOP, which modulates something in the sample loop and makes weird sounds - I’m not 100% sure what it is but it sounds very interesting - and is separate to sample start point modulation, which you can also do on a note retrigger.

Likely that's just loop length modulation.

Yeah the pitch doesn't change though so I think it's more likely, moving the entire loop (start and end point) back and forward. There's some cool ripping metal sounds to be had.
