Quick question concerning the midi-in, did they remember to add the ability to midi slave the mixer or did they also forgot to add this function for this new device?

Tascam should start making there own line of outboard.

I have a Model 12 and I really like it. I am also trying to incorporate my ZED24 onto the work surface so I can use it as a sub or mixer or summing mixer. This new mixer has my attention as it might cover what I am trying to do.

Looking at the MIDI implementation chart, there is no MIDI input control of any sort.

But we need to realize that this makes sense. There is no way that an audio playback device like this Tascam mixer can sync to incoming MIDI clock. And I'll explain why.

Let's say you record audio information at 120 BPM. Your MIDI sequencer also has MIDI info recorded at 120 BPM. If you try to slave the Tascam to your sequencer all will be fine if the sequencer is playing back at 120 BPM. But what happens if you change the Sequencer speed to 130 BPM. Another MIDI sequencer will follow it with no problem. But the Tascam cannot play the audio back at that faster speed. Unlike a DAW, it has no way to stretch or compress audio time. Digital audio playback would get all wonky.

This is why the audio playback device always needs to be the MASTER. The Tascam has MIDI clock out but no MIDI clock in for this reason.

Yes it does. But only for the MIDI out. It can act as the MASTER time source but cannot SLAVE to incoming MIDI clock.

No, it couldn't. I used one back in the day. You could stripe FSK or SMPTE time code to one track of the tape and that would be used as a MASTER to sync up your sequencer or DAW.

FYI: The MIDI clock out on this unit is very useful. It allows you to sync up your sequencer without needing to stripe timecode to a track and thus wasting one audio track. It would be nice if it could sync to an external time source, but unfortunately, it just can't work that way.

Multitrack cassette recorders (aka portastudio) with built-in sync facilities (tipically a switch for disabling noise reducing circuit on the sync track) could only playback a recorded sync signal (FSK), the same trick that can be used on today's digital multitrack recorders like the Model 16/24. There was no way to slave the tape speed to an external sync signal.
Studio multitrack reel-to-reel recorders are designed to be synchronized each other, but that's another story.

How would you midi sync an analog tape recorder to midi? These had about 0,15% wow and flutter! Would be completely out of sync in seconds! The german hifi norm allowed 0,2%!

I guess Tascam didn’t forget to implement midi time control over the mixer from another device, it’s simply to complicate to do. But I am just guessing.

I hope we will see a deluxe version of the Model12 in the future with most of the features of the 2400 for under a grand.
My biggest wish would be a Model8 or 10 the size of a Zoom Livetrak8. The Model12 is just that little bit too big to pack it into your gigback to record rehearsals or small gigs.

Unfortunately Logic can't be slaved to MIDI clock either. No friendship with the Model series :-)

In any case, as long as I can fit this in my living room (not sure yet?), this will be replacing my Model 12. It has everything I wanted from the M12 (EQ/comp bypass ) and twice the aux & channel count

They excluded by design synchronization to external MIDI clock because of the cost and reliability issues of such an option. Think of time-stretching already recorded material (say at 120 BPM) to a different MIDI clock than the original (say 122, or 118), not to mention jitter (clock fluctuation): if technically possible at all in such a small footprint, it would have put the Model 12 some price classes above the current.

No, it can't for the same reason. MIDI IN transfers incoming data to the computer, the same as in Model 12.

Hmm, my soundcraft mtk22 is finally dying … was going to buy a QU-24, but will need to research this one too. I’m guessing the A&H has better converters / sound.

Nice, I hope they do a 1600 -- the Model 12's not quite enough inputs for me and the 2400's a bit big for my space.

$2,000, at this price point I have to at least have a conversation with myself and discuss the SSL Big 6. Sure, different workflow etc, but I at least would have to think about saving up an additional $600. Be nice to see a 16-channel unit of one of these. I really like my Model 12 but this new model has some great new features.

It's got limited DAW control, not a deal breaker for me. So, am I correct in that this mixer is Analog like the Model 24?

I'm wondering if the price won't eventually drop down to about $1,699 or even a little lower. $800 more than the Model 24, that seems steep to me.

Looks like a M12 on steroids.

One thing I miss about the M12 vs the DP series is the lack of takes, and limited track editing.

I've wondered if they might add takes to the M12 but, as they are still not present on this new model, it seems unlikely.

This could replace my Mackie 2404VLZ and act as a mixer but more importantly as a recorder.
Will wait for the manual.

Traditionally, takes have been recorded in sequence, and then the multitrack (card/tape/etc) has been accompanied by a time stamped "take sheet".. you could do the same with M2400
