I have three jack bays, my fx rack and the inserts are wired to them. I also have 16 mic lines coming from my live room, to the xlrs on the 2400. I can’t now plug the line inputs in, unless I unplug a mic line, which is a pain. To get round the problem I use a sidecar mixer.

Why don't you go Mic XLR to 1/4 to the patch bays? Then you could hard wire the 2400 to the patch bay inputs and away you go.

Because sometimes they want to use the line inputs instead.

Yes. There's no way to run both mic and line from the same channel to a patch bay at the same time, unless one was to remove the pins from male XLR connectors and manually insert them into the combi jacks for mic, while simultaneously plugging in TRS connectors for line. Assuming that would even be physically possible.

On the Model12 you can switch the two headphone outs independently between aux1, aux2 for monitoring mixes and main. Isn’t something similar possible on the 2400? I found the headphone/ controller room settings the most confusing on my M12.

Setup channels 23 / 24 as an input in your DAW. That is the main bus output. Any sounds going out the main bus, minus the main bus inserts, will be captured.

Route whatever tracks you want the effects applied to on a bus and route the effects to that bus too. Then, go stereo out from that bus into either 2 mono tracks or 1 stereo track.

Example:

Mono tracks 1,4 and 7 to sub bus 1 / 2. Effects to sub bus 1 / 2 as well. On the back, patch cables from stereo sub bus 1 / 2 out to any channel in. Set up a stereo track in your DAW to those USB inputs and there you go.

Offhand…that seems as if it should work.

Ok so far so good.

The Soundlink doesnt compare. Its a little noisier but I do like the warm reverbs.
The 2400 has so much more inputs etc.

The inserts are good for your outboard.

The DA3000 is pristine to get a nice capture.

I put my SPL Vitalizer mk 3 after my 2400 and into the DA

That is strange, Korg made such a big promotion on its sound and the designers of the pres and overall sound

Peter Watts designed the pres for the Trident consoles.
I think the 1608 is solid but it doesnt record multitrack hence the purchase of the Model 2400.

I also have workstations ( Fantom 8 and Montage M8x )and the Akai MPC X SE.

I run 8 channels out of the mpc into 8 channels of the 2400 and use the faders if i want to but can use the inserts on the 2400 with some nice outboard.

I have some serious firepower and I didnt even mention half of it.

The DA 3000 is just for a nice capture at most sample rates which is better or nicer resolution than a DAW bounce.

Find what works for you to get your best and clean sound.

Although I am travelling the one thing I miss the most is music.

I'm writing lyrics every day but I miss the hands on with instrumentation and routing s@#$it to see what works and doesnt.

What you say is true about MIDI clock. As far as I know it has always been true about audio playback devices and MIDI clock, because MIDI clock serves a different purpose.

But it is not true about MIDI time code. Plenty of audio playback devices can be the sync slave if the sync is MIDI timecode. I believe this new model 2400 cannot slave to MIDI time code, but that's just a choice Tascam made.

Imagine Tascam adding MTC support in a future FW update.. Unlimited channel counts by chaining several Model's

Forgive my ignorance, but could I use this desk without a computer, like just as an analogue desk?

I do have a MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, but both are mid-2012, so the final OS available for both units wouldn't be new enough to run the Tascam drivers/software.

I've been using a couple of old Mackie CR-1604- vlz mixers since the early 90s, together with a ton of outboard, but finally fancy a new desk/mixer with EQ I can actually use. For now, I'm not interested in the digital/effects/recording side of the Tascam at all.

- So.., just curious, before I continue considering the Tascam, would I run into issues without the option/ability of interfacing it with a computer?

Yes, you can use it without a computer. That is what is was designed to do. Be a stand-alone mixer and recorder.

There's also another option if you want to continue using analog mixers and outboard and that's the Tascam Studio Bridge.

All the Models are class-compliant devices, MacOS doesn't need additional driver/software to recognize the unit. The additional software developed for the 2400 is a Level Meter display app, if you don't need it you can continue using older MacOS (I still run High Sierra + Model 12).
Windows OS may be a different story IDK.

Re. 2400 vs. 1604 + Bridge: the 2400 is a well-thought machine with enough busses and routing options that may be sufficient for standalone tracking and mixing, if you already have a Mackie 1604 then the Studio Bridge could be a good companion.

Yeah, if you already have a board you love, Tascam Studio Bridge is a solid option

What I personally love about the Tascam Model 12/2400 mixers, they are a standalone complete system, just add your audio sources and you're done. No need for computers, or external recorders, its all right there

With this series of Tascam mixers... a channel's input is hardwired to its corresponding track on the recorder section isn't it? (ie you can't reroute input 1 to track 5 if you're doing overdubs with a particular instrument connected to input 1.)

Nothing a patchbay can't fix up of course, but was just wondering. I look at these mixers from time to time because part of me flirts with the idea of going DAWless (and wondering if I should include a patchbay in my fantasy shopping list.)

You can also swap tracks after you have recorded the track, to keep the input-track relationship going without overwriting keeper tracks.

You could also look at the Tascam Sonic View 24 xp digital mixer .

Yes I know its 10 k $ but it also acts as an interface and recorder.
Packed full of fx , reverb, compression.
