tom oberheim isn't a "retired industry player," he's one of the reasons electronic music--in fact music as a whole--exists today as we know it. calling him a "retired industry player" is a little bit like calling francois truffaut a "retired film director" or george washington a "retired American president." he did more for synths than anyone alive on this planet, and that includes dave smith, who owes him a huge debt for establishing the industry.

to this day there is no poly analogue synth remotely as powerful as the Matrix 12. even the moog one doesn't come close. there is none that sounds better than the OB-X. there is nothing as liquid or rich as a SEM, except maybe a Minimoog.

to this day, these are--all of them--mind-blowing instruments, which is why they all cost small fortunes now. they will give you chills when you hear them in person. it happens every single time people come to my studio. their jaws drop and they just...stand there.

these instruments literally shaped the history of music so much that music as we know it today wouldn't exist without them. from journey to prince to hip hop to blue monday, the genre doesn't matter at all, rock, pop, dance--it is literally impossible not to encounter the long shadow of Oberheim everywhere you look.

Tom is a genius and deserves our respect and gratitude. anybody that doesn't understand this is an idiot who will never really blossom as a producer, and yes, i can all but guarantee that. you mark yourself out as a fool by not appreciating the stature of a resurrection of a company THIS important to electronic music. and this cherished and loved, too, by the professionals around here.

believe me when i say that anyone vaguely professional about electronic music--which is like four people on this dumb forum--are over the moon about this, because to this day, nothing, and i mean nothing, sounds like an oberheim. and that goes from the OB-X right down to the Matrix-12, from the DMX to a SEM.

Ah, I know of the book. Never knew there was a movie (other than the recent one). I saw Close encounters as a kid, but don’t remember it well. My dad loved that one.
