Didn’t say that, and happy they are making software. It’s just that now I know that this is their strategy I wouldn’t by a hardware digital synth from them. Especially with the sort comings that the wavestate has - crappy build quality and very poor keyboard.

Had I had the gift of hindsight I wouldn’t have purchased the wavestate and got the software instead.

As for Korg, I returned the Opsix as it sounded like a plugin in a box to me, this proves I was correct, despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth when I said that on the Opsix thread

However as a plug in, with a cool looking GUI it's well worth $150

Why would you expect anything to go differently?

Hardware is all but dead as concept. Software is more readily upgraded, more flexible in platform and scaling. Computers have larger screen space, longer lasting relevance due to upgrade and storage capacity. A hardware unit has to cost compromise. A controller can simply focus on feel, polyAT or whatever else you might fancy without breaking the bank. Then be plugged into any soft synth variety you like.

It doesn't just save space, it's common sense compared to the nigh farcical Kronos/Workstation concept. Which in modern times simply doesn't last long enough on the shelf, before hardware components need replacing. Components are easily swapped and upgraded from the PC/Laptop standpoint. How often do you want to bring your workstation to a tech for a full hardware transplant?

Cheaper boards you can always make a case for. Roland-O as example; provides you with a lot under the hood for a pricepoint you might not easily match by gathering the combined entity in soft/hard. But thats a much more difficult case for a 5-6grand flagship that you can do for peanuts on software. Or a throw away toy build like the hardware versions of these were. I've been playing numerous brands/boards for years. The mini-korgs are the most laughable embarrassment I've ever seen put into build. Worse than anything in the 80s let alone now. The software however? That's extremely different. Almost everyone out there will be using it with a superior controller now. Few if any of which, will be made by Korg.

Yep that was it! I missed the 1.1.10 release that came out later in the day, and I was using 1.1.9.
Now I'm testing out Opsix.

Both of these are fantastic.

Finally trying out Opsix now. Korg has really upped their UI game compared to the legacy synth emulations which are mostly... lacking.

Opsix is clean, modern, and very responsive with great visual feedback (though not for LFO's/envelopes oddly). It's not even trying to be like the hardware, it's very much its own instrument and very well executed. It has a clear influence from Massive X and Super 8 design language. And it's probably the best FM synth plugin I've used.

Wavestate mirrors the hardware a bit more, and has a completely different patch browser, but still very usable and fun. You still have to understand how the engine works though!

A couple bugs in Opsix that surely will be worked out. Learning MIDI CC's is very hit or miss... sometimes right clicking on a control will bring up a context menu, most of the time it won't, sometimes it shows up for a fraction of a second and disappears. I managed to map all 6 "level" controls to the sliders on my Novation controller; but only two of the 6 "ratio" knobs. Maybe it'll work better after it's registered.

Opsix is likely a buy for me. Loved the keyboard, and had to lose all my hardware during a move. Though I did just pick up an MPC Live and am tempted by both a Fantom-0 and modwave.

You'd have been without a wavestate for a couple years in that case. I'm not seeing the problem, and the software may not even have materialized.

The hardware OP6 has the best FM manipulation controls of any that I've seen. Crappy keyboard, but good ui design. Not surprised it carried over to the software version.

I ran a Google search and it seemed to indicate that Korg will not allow individual software licenses to be sold, but they do permit entire accounts to be resold (containing those licenses). I read this can be done by simply updating the email address and password and then handing it to the buyer.

I now have an account which contains 1x Wavestate license (purchased with a hardware crossgrade discount).

1) Am I correct in thinking I can potentially sell this Korg account?

2) And that the buyer will then have a full copy of the Wavestate software?

3) What would be a reasonable price to charge for this, do you think?

That's what you're seeing on an M1?

Because here, on an M1Pro, under Logic, playing no notes pegs a core to 100%. When you play some notes, the CPU drops to something more reasonable, but returns to 100% pegged as soon as it goes back to playing no notes.

The opsix pegs out a full core almost all the time, and glitches badly, and is unusable.

Performance is much better and more like what I'd expect, and predictable, running Logic in Rosetta and thus running the Intel versions of the plugins.

So for me at least, the native versions seem unusable, unless I'm missing something... Anyone else trying these on an M1Pro or M1Max machine? Do you see the same thing?

Edit: I tried natively in Live 11, and performance seems fine. So it's just in Logic something bad is happening, by the looks.

I think I must be stupid, I cannot figure out how to create a new mod routing in the Wavestate plugin.
Like Aftertouch to Layer A filter envelope decay. Right clicking on both the source and destination don't do anything, and there's no obvious way to add a new routing on the "Mod List" page. Am I just overlooking something obvious?

EDIT - found it, I'm just blind. When you click on a mod destination, the right sub-window turns into a little window (like Mod: Decay) where you can assign sources.

EDIT2 - also found my first bug... I modified one of the factory patches, hit the "save" icon next to the patch name, and then the window pops up with the name and author info. However, I cannot type in any of those boxes - instead, the keypresses are ignored by the plugin and pass through to the DAW.

So typing in my new performance name caused all sorts of craziness to happen in my DAW because I was just hitting a bunch of keyboard shortcuts.

This is on MacOS (M1) on Logic Pro X.

Are you running natively, or under Rosetta? And which version of Logic, and MacOS are you running?

Based on my experience with Roland Boutique and Cloud, the difference in workflow and form factor has much more impact on the result. I consider they are different instrument even the sound engine is exactly the same. I really like Roland Boutique small form factor, but I just choose Cloud version when I feel Cloud would be better in the context that I'm working on.

This is not about the sound, it's about workflow. Same as DAW choice.

There are still plenty of valid reasons to get and use a hardware unit instead of straight software, as discussed in a lot of threads here.

With these, you can have and use both. For example, program sounds with a computer, then use the keyboard for playing live.

In different times I have demoed all new korg synths in store extensively and native wavestate and opsix today.
From memory, hardware sounds more exciting due to conversion. More surrounding and alive.
Actually , you know , I will take opsix in the nearest days to compare with native version. It will be more objective.
But you all know this stuff : hw vs soft. I personally would take Korg M1 HW anytime compared to sw sound wise. Same with these new synths.
In the end those little % always goes long way in a sonics of production quality.
All new Wavestate/Modwave/Opsix hw have crappy keyboards and cheap plastic all around, but DAC sounds good and ui interaction is good.
If opsix hw and native are capable to exchange programs - it will be a great way to combine two together in preproduction statges.

Take one mic thru different preamps - there will be difference...
route softsynths out of the box thru warming gear and there will be small or not difference in sound - is your choice.
Just saying I quite like DAC "from" Korg in those instruments.

Thinking mostly in that kind of route . No question about soft is identical or patches.

I remember when Novation did their V-Station and it got instantly "liberated". They really regretted that. Maybe the synth market is so much bigger now that Korg know they'll make enough even if some does slip through the erm.. cracks.

And on the subject of liberated synths, I wonder why they allow a thread on this forum dedicated to pinching whole hardware synth engines that run on Motorola DSPs. I can't imagine Access, Novation, Nord or Waldorf are happy with that.

Does the DAC make a literal difference in the sound? Sure, sometimes, it might. A very literal test could be done to see what that literal difference actually consists of, between the hardware DAC output and the software plugin output.

Does that literal difference actually == a "more surrounding and alive" sound quality? No, in my opinion, it does not. That is simply called Placebo.

If you update Korg Software Pass this problem goes away.

I got the same error but this went away when I downloaded the version of the Korg installer that comes with the opsix purchase email. I think its a version issue with the Korg installer app. Not related as far as I can tell to business of servers

I think I’m going to return my OpSix and Modwave. I’ll eat the restocking fees, it is what it is.

Today was pretty sobering for me. I think I’m done fighting for hardware. As much as I want individual instruments and don’t mind using a mix of both hardware and software, Korg really opened my eyes to how little they value their new hardware synths.

Just seems kind of weird to offer software versions of hardware that’s still in production. Triton, iPolysix, Wavestation, M1, they made sense. MS2000, MMT engine, those would be very welcome.

These though…it just feels very wrong. At least when Roland did it with the System-8, there was still an incentive to go physical and access unique features that are offered on hardware that you can’t do at all with the VST.
