A lot of people on synth forums propagate creating your own sounds instead of using presets.
Ok, but how does your self-programmed sound become "signature", special? Do you use the same few sounds over and over in every song? Or do you create a variety of sounds for every song?
But then, how is it "signature"? How does a listener know that this sound is "signature" and special and not just another preset? All presets are also created by someone, so in that regard every sound out there is "signature".
When I listen to the music I can never tell if sound is a preset or artist's own creation. They all sounds like.. well.. sounds to me. In early 90s there were only a few synths with like 128 presets each so it was possible to recognize presets. But today we have dozens of synths, vsti and all have thousands of presets. You cant recognize presets anymore. They're all drops in the sea.
So in the sense your signature sound gets lost in everybody else's signature sound because there's absolutely nothing you can do to make your sound sound custom-made or have character because there are thousands of "characters" out there and the word character doesnt mean much anymore. Its just "another" preset/sound to everybody else ears. One of billion variations of some other sound which in term is a variation of another sound and so on...
I just find the whole "signature" sound concept confusing.
I adopted the "No Preset" creed, waaaay back in the day.
It had NOTHING to do with "Signature sound" it had EVERYTHING to do with "I want to learn this instrument and master my tools"
I worked at a very successful music library at one point, we had major cue orders, where whatever we gave them (Front and back end) made network and cable air.
About 15 composers? Anyway, I remember the library owners had me giving "Synth lessons" to the other composers. Any electro stuff that wasn't just basic sounds, went to ME.
And to this day I can sit down at any synth and know how to use it. (Yes, I can program a DX7) Actually, let me amend that, I have no experience with modular...then again, I know how a synth works, so that would be no problem either.
That's the reason to do it, that's why I did it.
Now I could care less, If a preset is handy, I'll use it without thinking, if I have to make the sound myself, I do.
