I have 10 tracks or so in the queue, all waiting for me to finish writing the drums which I always do last.

It literally takes me months to do the sequencing and custom sound design but I do believe its worth it.

For example, I am doing an 8 step drum sequence using only the CP-251 noise and Murf as the sequencer that sounds great but will take me about another month or two to get it exactly right.

Drums: The Moog DFAM VCA was controlled over CV via the TTSH ADSR envelopes and was used to create a sound similar to hihats, the CV trigger was from the TTSH ringmod. The kick was hand sculpted via the Korg MS20M, with a decay. Both the DFAM and the MS20M were ran thru Sound Devices usbpre2 (yes I have 3 of them, lowest noise floor of any gear I own and it fits my workflow perfectly plus its built like a tank) -- Speck Xtramix -- Moog MF-101 LPF -- Moog MF-103 phaser (LPF and phaser were synced over CV from the TTSH AR output envelopes) -- GAP COMP-3A (LA3A clone) with no eq -- Zoom F8.

The video closes with a the pic of the Korg MS20m patch.

As I only record for myself Im not as obsessive, plus drums dont really interest me...I do waste time on archaic samplers and tape when I have the time (I have a young family so time is precious)

Ok, but how does your self-programmed sound become "signature", special? Do you use the same few sounds over and over in every song? Or do you create a variety of sounds for every song?

But then, how is it "signature"? How does a listener know that this sound is "signature" and special and not just another preset? All presets are also created by someone, so in that regard every sound out there is "signature".

I on the contrary try to NEVER use any sound twice no matter how good. Sometimes I will find a particular sound fit the song sooo good... only to realize I already used it once. Tossed out instantly.

Same with style. I push myself to write songs that are NOT reflections of my style, different, the ones that are "that's so unlike me". I don't succeed very often but the satisfaction from achieving that (breaking my character) is immense compared to just "another one".

I kind of grew along with those who criticize sameness and praise variety in artists expression, those who don't stick to any kind of formulas and try to surprise you with their each new work.

I have quite a few favorite artists who released like 5-10 albums with their signature style. They're ok, but it makes me respect them a little less because of that. I don't know if anyone knows Schiller (german), he's a great example. Lovely music, but of limited replayability because everything sound monotonous after a few plays. He may not realize that and thinks that his every song is different than the other but it's the sonic signature (sound, style, everything) that becomes tiresome over time and if you get tired of one album, you get tired of them all.

I'm not sure if trying to develop "signature" sound is a good thing at all. You cramming yourself into a small box called "character", I think. That box later becomes a crutch, a shortcut where instead of trying to push your limits creatively you just follow safe "character" path and create familiar sound picture. Everyone wants to be recognizable, but in the grand scheme of things I think there's more harm to this than good.
