Edit- 4 separate oscillators- a tone monster in mono mode too and two full adsrs. Good going Moog! I'm guessing around £1500 ish over here- perhaps a touch more? Going by the Grandmother price.

It really seems like a next step for Moog is to put each part of these synths out as a separate Eurorack module....

This looks nice, but I already have a Grandmother, so I'm good. Any other Grandmother owners feeling envious should pick up a Neutron. It patches very well with the Grandmother, and will get you 80% of the way there for half the price. It will also give you some extra options, like the Moffatt filter and another envelope.

Yep. I do this with Neutron and Boog. I do wish there was a rack made that would put them conveniently above the GM though.

OK I see the LFO now. Looks *very* limited - I wish they had done two full-fledged LFO sections. That would have mattered to me more than 4 VCO's, personally.

Stereo controls are in the delay section.

This is like a super Mono/Poly though, so the 4 VCO is a welcome addition.

The first one that sprung to my mind was the Perfourmer Mk2. Not as patchable, no effects and no keyboard but proper polyphony and 4 LFOs. Panning on the oscillators too, not sure how they do that on the Matriarch.

Then there's the Dreadbox stuff, and down at the bargain end there's the Pulse 2/Rocket, the Microfreak and even the Volca Keys for paraphonic analogue action.

I think the Moog tax rebate is from corners cut like the plastic case (if it's like the Granny). Is that acceptable on a $2k synth?

I wonder which BBD chips they're using. "Stereo analog delay w/ up to 700ms of MIDI sync-able stereo or ping/pong style repeats". So that's 700ms in total rather than 700ms per side? Sounds like two MN3005 chips? Or three? The Xvive ones? Or they could be using the Coolaudio V3205? They seem to be slightly muddier than the old ones.

Like the Grandma, this is a modern Moog product I'd actually like to own.

This is the synth I've been wanting Moog to make for some time. The One was just too prohibitively expensive and ambitious to the point of overkill. This seems like a somewhat more practical addition to their catalog.

The price isn't as steep as I was expecting (especially considering the used-car price tag of the One). Not a bargain by any stretch, but nothing too outrageous. I just recently purchased a Grandmother, which I love, but might have waited had I known this was on the horizon.

These weird combos don't get you the paraphony and keys so easily without a controller, a load of cables and a few extras. By that point you've got a messy desk, more cognitive load and you're not having so much fun, may as well use VSTs! I know because I've been down these roads and am paring back.

I'm not saying yours and others aren't valid suggestions but there's value to the package, the sum is greater and all that jazz

Glad to see GC put some effort into a non-sensationalized video a la Moog's reveal one.

I think this will be the perfect partner for my modular setup... the immediacy is stellar.

The darkness would indicate 3205 to me, plus they seem to treat the MN3008 they use in MF104M like some kind of rare jewel that I can't see them building into a synth.

If they're using MN3005 it would need 4 chips. I'm not jumping to any conclusions.

Oh and btw the case is not plastic...

Seriously? On a paraphonic synth with 90 patch points you'd rather have a extra LFO than an extra voice?

You think it's 700ms per side? MN3008 is 2048 stages vs the 4096 of the 3005. Maybe it's just two (or four if it is 700ms per side) Xvive MN3005 that are clocked down to get 700ms max and heavily filtered. Even four Xvives is a chunk of money for a 2 grand synth.

I pre-ordered from GC early this morning. Will sell off something to make space and help pay for it. Likely Subsequent 37 or Prophet 6. Maybe Pro-2. I really like all three of those, but something must go.


I played the Grandmother for a while in GC today. It really does sound great. Thought about maybe just getting that on sale for $1200 less than the Matriarch.

Hold on, is the grandma fully plastic, or just the end cheeks? If they are built like phattys, they’d have steel top and bottom. Granny owners, what’s the case like? Nice and strong?

Construction is similar to an MG1.

Plastic end cheeks, like the MS20.

It feels pretty solid, just the spring reverb rattling around inside can be a bit disconcerting!

I’m every bit in love with my Grandmother as the day I got it, but got hands on with the Matriarch today at Moogfest and...... wow.

Even with all the interesting things you can do on the Grandmother, the Matriarch really goes to town, without at all suffering from featureitis.

Truly classic sound, but also wonderful linear FM, for example, even using arpeggiator as LFO and LFO as oscillator for FM. WILD sounds.

Hope I didn’t break the prototype..... they were building another to get onto the floor for Moogfest, too, so no worries.

The delay is truly great, doesn’t use unobtainium like the classic Moogerfooger does, but it’s still quite sweet and dark, like the best Belgian chocolate; very flavorful.

And the coolest thing is, even with the added capabilities, it still retains that classic Moog sound, no matter what you do.

Strong, and surprisingly heavy. But then again I’m a studio hobbyist, not the rampaging elephant some of you folks might be; my Roland JP-8000 is still pristine and I bought it new, soon after its release, not a scratch on it, though the shine has mottled a little on my favorite black keys. I have acid hands. [please note this is not a sales come-on; the JP-8000 will be with me in my grave, I like it that much!]

I would have to sell my prophet 6, I listened to YouTube videos all day of both and I can't do it.. they both sound great, but the prophet just sounds better to me and more alive. I wouldn't sell your prophet 6 for it.

In my brief chat with the lead designer today (that was a real honor!), no specific promises of anything of course, but it did sound to me like there were other things they might consider doing for the Matriarch.

Meanwhile, no idea whether splits would be possible on a paraphonic synth, though? But if you can patch it to run the two filters in serial rather than parallel, say, and then use multiples to route their outputs in different ways, with two multiples available (just thinking out loud), and use aftertouch or velocity more like to change the sound and affect delay timing (via patch cords), you could do some interesting things..... yes? No?

In for one. Pre-ordered.

EDIT: K. So. What eurorack modules would you folks suggest as good/useful add-ons for this puppy? I only have a couple of the Aira effect ones.

Yeah, I am in the same boat - completely out of space, and I ran out of things I am OK with getting rid of. I will deal with it when the time comes.

Oh btw, as a non-sequitur, I was very pleased to have a chance to chat briefly with Automatic Gainsay today, at the Buchla stand at Moogfest (sounds like Buchla is doing quite well these days).

Not only has Marc been entertaining for years (decades?) with his YouTube demos, but he seemed like a truly nice guy (and still quite enthusiastic about it all) in person. Again, a real thrill for this 12-year old fanboy trapped in an old man’s body (send candy!) to have had a chance to meet.
