Hello, well im 61yrs old, and retired, i started playing the bass guitar about 15months ago, i take lessons once a week. I love modern folk, i love the space between notes, the silence inbetween strums. Im assembling a rehearsal studio, but like kevin costner in field of dreams, i didnt know what it was going to be. I think i know, im going to assemble a band to play modern folk.

Im wondering how to go about this, but i gotta go where musicians are i think ? There is a music store in my area that offers lessons, do you think they would be willing to talk to any students playing this type of music if they would be interested ?

So, regardless i have a Yamaha Stage Custom kit arriving in 2wks, a good friend is going to tune it for me, but hopefully soon i can take some lessons from him on playing them. I have an ampeg 410 and a GK Amp. Once the drums are setup im gonna buy a nice tube combo amp. I would like to have my own gear for some reason, maybe thats stupid idk.

Go for it. Go to places where musicians are and make friends. Go to concerts. Have fun. It's your responsibility to take care of the fun you should have. And having equipment, a van and a rehearsal space is a good position :-) Finding the right people is what's the difficult part. After that, you still have good and bad days but you will enjoy it.

Thing… then while talking to a musician, he asked me what kind of music i like, and maybe what music i would like to play, bingo an idea was born.

I need an acoustic guitar player, i smallish PA and mic for it, i need a drummer who can not over play, but play enough, probably a keyboard player too

Your biggest challenge will be the other people you work with. So choose wisely. Don’t allow yourself to be overly dazzled by musical ability. Yes, you want to work with good musicians. But you also want to work with like-minded people. Coping with contrary prima donnas can drain all the joy out of music. When looking for musicians to work with, always ask yourself: “Can I get along with this person?” And know yourself. Like all of us, you likely have things that tick you off. Know your ability to put up with crap. If it’s easy to push your buttons, then know that going in. Don’t saddle yourself with people who constantly rub you the wrong way.

Bear in mind that music is a psychologically intimate endeavor. To some, disagreeing with their musical taste is tantamount to questioning their worth as a person. So gathering a group of touchy musicians to work together is a hotbed for discord. In fact, based on your first post, I can start an argument right off the bat: Why does a folk music group need a drummer? (See how easy that was?)

Thanx man, im just so freakin excited about this drum kit, and the fact my buddy is gonna give me some lessons which has gotta help me understand my bass playing position inregards to drums !!!!

Im no closer to having a band but im at a new store taking lessons from a new teacher, im thinking of posting a flyer at the store, a “Wanted” kinda thing…..

just be way of bad musicians signing up, I had a nightmare experience once with trying to start a band from adverts in a shop, it started off well but you've got to get to know the people before being in a band with them, I was young and naive at the time.
