I'd like to try recording in various rooms which aren't acoustically treated, such as my kitchen.

My envisioned scenario would be to use a single ribbon mic (probably figure-of-8 polar pattern) about 2 feet away from me. I'd simultaneously be singing and playing an acoustic guitar.

I see that a number of companies make portable gobos (usually about 6ft tall by 2 feet wide which open out like a book). An example is the GIK PIB (Portable Isolation Booth). I'm in the UK, so there are a few other manufacturers. Some gobos are made out of PET (something or other) and may only be 24mm or one inch thick.

One manufacturer on their website suggests opening one panel out in front, then placing an additional one to the rear left and one to the rear right creating a sort of open hexagonal booth.

How effective are these things? Also, what are the optimum materials and dimensions?

Well made portable panels are ideal for scenarios like this, and give engineers a lot more flexibility when recording, especially in untreated rooms.

What's the minimum recommended configuration for a seated singing guitarist? For example, for height would two stacked (120cm) be sufficient, or would you really need three (180cm)?

Then for surrounding the performer, what would be required? 60cm doesn't seem very wide. Would you need two stacks side-by-side to sing\play into, then some 'wings' down each side? What about the area behind the performer?
