Hey everyone,
I have seen that there is already a post listing ambisonics microphones but there is no objective discussion on which microphones are better for what.
Now, I have this little project of realizing an unbiased comparison chart between available microphones and keep it updated.
Based on some discussion I had with other ambisonics users, the characteristics that are most relevant would be these:
Size
Weight
Type of Output (analog/digital - connections and protocols)
Equivalent noise level per capsule
Equivalent noise level on the encoded array
Max SPL
Signal to Noise Ratio
Individual calibration
Decoded polar patterns available?
Frequency response chart available?
Case / Shock Mount / cables / wind protection provided on purchase
Price
Because fetching information can be difficult and sometimes things are listed under different names on the manufacturer's websites it would be nice if someone interested would like to help me with that
An Example I came up with is this this for the Rรธde NT-SF1
SIZE: 192.3 x 45.7/25.1 mm (L x D)
WEIGHT: 286g
OUTPUT: Analog (10-pin to 4 XLR snake cable)
EQUIVALENT NOISE LEVEL PER CAPSULE: 17 dB(A)
EQUIVALENT NOISE LEVEL OF ENCODED ARRAY:
MAXIMUM SPL: 129dB
SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO:
INDIVIDUAL CALIBRATION: No
DECODED POLAR PATTERNS AVAILABLE:
FREQUENCY RESPONSE CHART AVAILABLE:
CASE / SHOCK MOUNT / CABLES / WIND PROTECTION: Generic shock mount, cable and wind shield with jammer available and included, case not included.
Everything missing is because I couldn't find it on the manufacturer's website.
I know that some manufacturers make their decoded polar patterns and frequency response charts available on request as long as users don't share them publicly. That's why I think that replying "yes" or "no" on those voices would be enough.
The list of mics I am aware of is the following, I would focus only on the mics doing actual 3D Ambisonics (so no Zoom H2n or Josephson)
