I sent an email out to a UK seller of the Sorbothane Hemisphere’s asking for some advice.

I was told the 30mm 70 durometer would be suitable for the Yamaha HS80m’s.

There are two sizings on their website, unfortunately he only sells 70 durometer as he personally believes they are generally the best for most applications.

I have linked the two options available here. The 19mm aren’t sufficient according to the website. The 30mm are, but I’m concerned these will have a negative impact on the sound as my monitors are only 11.3kg and the 30mm have a 36kg rating per set of 4.

If anyone could shed some light on this and provide some more detailed analysis that would be great.

Are the 30mm okay or will they will be far too hard and cause imbalances etc?

OK ... I found my old purchase order for the HS80m monitors

That guy is not telling the truth. The loading is the most important piece of the puzzle. If they arent compressed enough or if they are compressed too much, they do not work.

You could possibly go for the larger ones, then add weight and mass to your speakers by placing bricks on them. Might use a cloth or pad so as not to mar them. The speakers not the bricks.

Should I avoid the 70 durometer then?

Can’t seem to find anywhere that does the 30 and 50 durometer here in the UK. All sold out. Unless anyone here can share a good source to purchase them.

I contacted Isolate It! for some advice, via their website, but never received a reply.

I’d really like to get the Hemisphere’s sorted asap. Had some spare time the last few weeks and I’ve been putting the little home studio together. If I can get this out the way I can begin focusing on apsects of the setup.

Did you try Amazon ?

note: as I recall, it is preferred to use the lowest duro value that still handles the weight in the optimum range.

I have tried Amazon and they are ‘currently unavailable’ in all sizes.

I’ve sent an email to another company here in the UK that sells them. Hopefully they have some in stock.

How do you find them? Did they make much of a difference to overall sound and performance?

Also, do you have any issues with them marking the desktop / monitors? I have read a lot of reviews that claim these break down over time and stick to the surface like chewing gum.

If I were you, I'd ixnay the pad idea, and build some boxes (or have them built), and then fill them with sand, packing it in as tightly as possible. The top of the box would be smaller than the bottom, and would not come into contact with any of the four sides. That will KTS out of any sorbothane bumpers, or any other pads you will find.

I’m pretty new to the production side of things, so trying to keep it simple to begin with. The desk the monitors sit on is pretty solid and I don’t seem to get much feedback through it when I crank up the sound. I just want to clean things up and get a nice, true response from them.

Apologies for my lack of knowledge, just learning as I go with all of this. I have a small pot of funds to put into my setup, but trying to make it stretch and get the best out of everything on a limited budget.

I have sent out a few emails regarding the Hemisphere’s, so fingers crossed someone will have them in stock. It seems like the best adjustment I can make at the moment, without breaking the bank!

I tried all the 'home' remedies .... including cutting up some shoe insert gels. [you know .... gellin']. [i didn't like walking around with them ... so, not a loss].

Sorbathane works. Period. [just get the right size and duro].

Mine over 5+ years old. Still good as new. Works better than anything else I've tried ... and the best cost-wise.

The set I have are on cider block 'stand'. Not sure of any 'marks' being left ... not seen.

If you don't like em, you could always pass them off to a kid ... tell em they're 'Gummy Bears' .... it'll kept them busy for quite some time ....

Received a positive return email this morning from a company that produces and sells the Sorbothane Hemisphere’s here in the UK.

The guy was very helpful and explained everything in great detail. He also stated the 30MD50 were ideal for my monitors based on the weight ratings and specifications.

Unfortunately, they are not in work at the moment due to the current Covid-19 lockdown, but said he will add me to the prospective order list if I wish to make a purchase. I’ve informed him I would like a set of 8 and he is going to get in touch with me upon his return to normal business hours, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

I’m in no rush and will be patient until he can get them shipped out. I can at least focus on other aspects of my setup in the meantime.

I think those are the 'feet' design.

I went with the Dome design. Not sure if that makes any difference. They do squish down from the monitor weight.

Something to keep in mind ... the sorbathane isolators well raise the height of the monitors ... mine, about a 1/2" I guess ...

These are the dome design. 30M50D rating. They manufacture them here in the UK.

He went into great depth explaining the various methods of application.

A good price too. Approximately £20, plus postage.

The slight raise in the height should be fine. The monitor tweeters are positioned at ear level.

I will update the thread as and when I get the Hemispshere’s and I’ve tried them out.

Just had a further 3 week extension of our lockdown here in the UK. Could be months before we return to any kind of normality, and I believe the social distancing measures will remain in place for quite some time.
