Wood for diffusers

Hi,

does it matter which wood for skyline diffusers?
I read some are made of beech, but there are way cheaper alternatives, like pine or spruce.
Can I take those too without sacrificing performance?

The effectiveness is more dependent on size and placement. The type of wood used is negligible.

I made one using pine because it was cheap.

It doesn't matter as long as the surface is non-porous, either coated or sanded down so the surface smooth.

So, if you coat and finish them, would you do it prior to assembly or afterwards?
My procedure would be to first glue the pieces to each other, then glue the backplate - this way I can make it really fit to the mm.
I guess best would be to spray it at the end. How do you avoid finish collecting between the pieces? I never did it, so the question might seem stupid...

Also what kind of wood as the back? I would want to mill it, as I have an idea how to mount it without screws.
