so if I decided to update my current cubase 8 pro to 13 does it mean I have to stop using version 8 on my current PC? I'm thinking of upgrading to a new mac system and want to purchase the upgrade for the best price before the current sale prices end, could I run both without issues? I know the new one is non e-licenser based.

My plan is to buy the upgrade now then later buy a mac and hopefully install it but I need to continue to be able to work on my current windows 7 machine with cubase 8 on it.

also is anyone using cubase 13 on monteray mac os? and how does it work for you?

The new version will be licensed with the new system and the old license (upgraded to any version up to 11) remains on the elicenser so you can run C8, 9, 10 or 11 as long as the elicenser is working and connected and 12, 13 on the new license.

also lets say I crossgraded to nuendo which is something I am also considering, I presume this means I sacrifice cubase 8 pro and can't then use it again?

It used to be the case that your usb elicenser license was updated to a Nuendo license and you couldn't then use Cubase.

Since the new licensing, you actually can still use Cubase but I believe you're stuck on the version you crossgraded from.

As you're udpating and crossgrading from one licensing type to another I have no idea what that means for you.

I would message Steinberg to be sure this works how you need.

You won't lose licenses. Cb8 pro is still yours to boot up......AND NOTE....

If you crossgrade/buy current Cubase, you receive 3 licenses to simultaneous machines...in addition to you can keep running cb8....AND NOTE.....

If you also buy/crossgrade to Nuendo...you get 3 of those licenses.

I own Cubendo13....can run 6 machines (3 cubase, 3 nuendo)....AND NOTE...

because I also begin with sb stuff on my e-licenser, I can run my SIX current cubendos AND via the dongle...cubase5,6,7,8,9, etc....all the time 24/7...BUT NOTE...

when your dog eats your dongle in 2027, you will have NO further access to cubase8 and earlier...because....no server...no replacement dongles...period!!!!!!.....BUT NOTE.....

in the past couple of weeks, users of older cb dongle-based versions have been piping up at the sb forums saying....WTF...you guys can't just lock me out after January 2025 for something that should still work forever....just because I lose the dongle....

to which, sort-of surprisingly....sb replied.....we'll work something out for you in that possible eventuality.

Whatever that means, dunno.

For the moment, you may want to prepare for the idea that your days with cubase 8 are numbered ...especially if you own a dog

thanks for the help, it's good to know I could keep using the older version of cubase, that's great news, I've not pulled the trigger yet, but I am seriously considering nuendo, it's the ultimate DAW in my opinion, it would be especially powerful on a mac with the new silicone chip. What is your current system specs noodles with running nuendo? how is it working for you compared to cubase?

I run several master/slave pcs with Nuendo usually booted up on 3 of them. I continue to buy Cubase upgrades as I like supporting Steinberg, upgrades are inexpensive, the release curves are a bit sooner than Nuendo.

But I dunno....I really like Nuendo better than Cubase even though I'm only using it for music rather than post and. Just something about it....

does this mean if I update to nuendo I'd get access to the earlier versions as well of nuendo? for example nuendo 8? I think that's what you are saying there thenoodle? cheers.

I have to check & see just what I've downloaded from the site & opened via dongle. I know it's all the old Cubase versions.

EDIT...no access to old Nuendos unless you have some fashion of elicenser Nuendo license already on the dongle.

one more question noodle, if I upgraded to latest cubase, can I upgrade to any version in between 8 and 13, so if I want to open cubase 10 or 9 will it work?

Interesting question. What's on your dongle now? Is it a Cubase 8 pro license physically on the dongle?

Mine is ver 10. Which has let me open pretty much any earlier versions I've downloaded... Cubase 4 (or whatever) through 9.5. I kinda like 9.5.

If you though.... have a ver8 license on the dongle..hmm...I really dunno about, say, ver 9.

On one hand, it shouldn't work for you....but hey....maybe sb threw a switch in the system and now, it'll work.

Have you tried downloading ver 9 from the SB site to check if it starts up successfully?

If it doesn't....I don't see that 10 will either.....since neither of those are on your dongle.

THIS SOUNDS INTERESTING TO ME THOUGH AS A TEST......dwnld 9, install, try to start it up....if it doesn't start (wants an access code or whatever)...hey, I'd then pm a SB mod and say "hey, I have a ver8Pro license on the dongle (they'll verify)..."and I'd really also like to use ver 9".....

maybe....maybe...they can/do a bit of magic....HOWEVER.....if I were the one doing THAT test, I'd FIRST purchase...as in .NOW....Cubase 13...so that...(1) sb sees you're actively buying (2) you then have access to 11, 12.....

Sb may then also throw a switch to give you access to "10"....which was a dongle-based license.

This is all random stuff but I WOULD do this myself if I didn't already have everything I need.

The server is still on....this would be the time to ask sb....AFTER you buy in to 13 imo.

Answer won't necessarily be "yes".....but at this point in time before January...I'm constantly interested in what sb can/can't/will/won't do.

Interesting stuff to me....I vote try it But pay the upgrade to 13 right now as it's such a good deal.

One further aside (in case you're successful), I'd advise downloading ALL the old ver installers NOW...TODAY. They "should" still all be on the servers after Jan 1 2025....but you never know.

thanks I do believe you sir, I just upgraded to 13, which means I need to get version 10 for now which is the last version fully working on windows 7. Early next year I'll be upgrading my system and then I can install version 13 on that.

thanks I'll definitely download all versions I can get and save them onto an external SSD just incase before next year as a precaution, I already have version 6, 7 and 8 though.

I just upgraded my eLicenser based Cubase Pro 9.5 to Nuendo 13 this afternoon and a Cubase Pro - 11 license remains on the eLicenser plus the 3 Nuendo authorizations I have in my account. Better upgrade any eLicenser based license soon because there's a warning on Steinberg's website that beginning in early 2025 you will no longer be allowed to upgrade those licenses.
