Hi all - I'm a musician, mainly.
I have a band that does a fair number of private events, and for these I typically run a couple of 4xpar bars, controlled with this little controller from GC:

It's easy, and I don't have to think about the lights much. I can set it to listen to the music and change automatically, or slowly change, or whatever, and I don't have to worry about it. Easy to do blackouts between sets, adjust the brightness etc. We don't typically have a sound engineer except when we do larger events and the clients budget can justify it, maybe once every year or two. Most often I run sound from the stage.
So, with setup, performing, singing, sound, etc, lighting is even *more* of an afterthought.
I'd love to eventually get a setup where I can have a master controller running my click and backing tracks, as well as sending out DMX messages synced up with those. The easiest way I can think to do that is to use something like an ableton push or similar to run my tracks, and simultaneously send out MIDI messages to a little DMX controller, maybe like this one:

The first question is, if I don't have programs set up for every song/set of tracks, is there a way to combine DMX messages with the above controller so that I can fall back on the simple button controls? I've seen 2-in-1-out DMX merge boxes, but my question is if I connect the tetra controller and another DMX source like the above from amazon, which one takes precedence when they conflict?
The second question is, maybe there's a better choice than a MIDI->DMX box combined with the 2-in-1-our DMX merge box. Does someone make a merge box that also accepts midi in?
Thanks! As you can tell, my lighting knowledge and chops are limited, so treat me kindly. :-D
Above all, whatever solution I arrive at needs to be easy to run, and not take the mental cycles I'd rather devote to performing. Easy setup would be a plus too. It would also be nice if in a DMX conflict, the system would fall back on the terta controller, since that has easy/quick physical controls.
Thanks!
Geoff
