Hello, what is difference between the beyerdynamic m69 and m88 in sound? and application?

To my ears the M88 is a deeper sounding version of the M69. I actually prefer the M69 because it can be used with less proximity affect. I was using my M69s yesterday and loved them.

Electric Guitars primarily and some vocals. I always prefer a tube mic for most vocals over the M69 or M88, but at times they shine on vocals as well.

The M88 is a known standard for miking kick drum, in fact one of the best. Works well on bass too. For electric guitar, distorted or otherwise, both the m69 and m88 work well. The M88 works good on vocals as well. It's was used by Phil Collins for this purpose. But the M69 also works well on vocals.

I would love some more descriptions of the overall sound of the M69. I just ordered mine, should be here in a week! I can't wait to try it out on my guitar cab.

The m69 is all about meaty midrange. You'll love it. It's great for live Vic too.

No mic would be of much use to a dead Vic. ;-)

M88 is my favorite bass cab mic, M69s go well on toms, guitar amps, some singers, snares although I prefer the 201 on snare generally.

I've heard a lot about the M201, and that it does well in any situation that you'd use a 57 on. When I was ordering, it was tough to decide whether or not I wanted the M69 or the M201. The M69 states guitar cabs specifically so I'm giving it a shot in hopes that it would be different/better than my transformerless 57. I'll be using the M69 for double tracking electric guitars, along with a Sennheiser E906.

The 906 is a little more beefy, and has a smooth, yet, powerful midrange.

How does the M69 compare to the M201?

The M201 is much flatter than either the SM57 or the e609 (never used the M69). A much more useful allround dynamic than the SM57 IMO! However, you may feel the need to EQ up some more 'crack' on snare or 'edge' on guitar cab if you're used to a 57 on these sources.

The E609 has way too much top end "air" for my taste, which is why I opted for the E906. I've never really been unhappy with the 57, specially after modding it, I am just bored with it. It IS the "tried and true workhorse", and I'm ok with that, but I would be more enthusiastic about using a 57 on snare rather than guitar cabs. I'm hoping the Beyer M69 will give me the edge of a 57 without the raspy junk that comes along with using a 57.

The E906 just rules on guitar cabs, and I am glad I picked it up. Aside from the M69, I am also considering an Avantone CV12.

The M88 is a bigger sound. The M69 feels a little more focused, maybe. Both have really great rejection, and that is a big reason I like them for scratch vocals. You can put the drums in the M69 or M88 null and actually listen to the scratch vocal AND know mostly what your drum mics are doing.

I have a chance to buy an old M69 locally. I intend to use it for recording stereo guitar cabs at home
(I already have one, albeit an old Tuschel connector version)
While some say they're great for miking cabs, I've also seen mention that they have a low end rolloff
If I do a bunch of Pog octave down stuff through the cabs should I be looking at other mics?

I've also read that the earlier non-humbucking versions aren't good for cab miking..why would that be?

m88 is a bit woofy up close , beautiful 8" out for vocals .

The M88 has a wider and flatter frequency response and captures more highs and more lows as well as handling transients a little better. That makes it more versatile and a better choice for percussive sources as well as instruments with LF content (kick, bass etc). It has a different sound from the M69 which (IMO) generally works better for vocalists, esp females.

By comparison, the M69 is a bit more mid-heavy and can work in some scenarios where a narrower FR will work or for a slightly more lo-fi or retro effect.

The M69 is a bit like a bandpass filter - it has neither deep bass nor treble prominently. Very usable if you would try a MD409 but it has too much beef for your mix. Not the sound you would want for metal or hardcore as the main guitar, but think rockabilly or rocknroll, Beatle, Tom Petty - do you get what i mean?

I have not used an m88. But I had an M69 for several years and liked it very much for tenor sax. It was something of a "go to" for me in that application. That being said, if the saxophonist likes to move around a lot then I'd switch to another mic. As has been mentioned, it has strong rejection and the sweet spot is relatively narrow.

The M69 also seemed to do well with vocals (excelled on some female vocals) and guitar cab.

I sold the mic a few years ago when I needed some $. That was NOT a smart move. I didn't get much for it and quickly found myself missing it.

So I ended up buying another.

I agree with most everything in this thread. A lot of good insight. I absolutely love beyer mics and you really can't go wrong with any of these mics. I use all three mics mentioned here virtually every day. Here's what I hear:

M69 - rich mids, sparkly top end. Not too much low end. Great on guitar amps, vocals, horns, and snare top.

M88 - super lows, strong mids, smooth top. Bass drum is where this mic really shines. Also great on trumpet, vocals, percussion, and bass cabs. Proximity effect makes this mic not a great choice when focus is needed.

M201 - not as colorful as the others but very beautiful sounding and useful mic. Classic snare mic, but works well on bass drum beater side, acoustic guitar (especially nylon string), and trumpet. Kind of like a 57, but without the harsh highs, and more proximity effect. Also much greater rejection than a 57 and much smoother.

The M69 is the mic I cut my teeth on 100 years ago on a Tascam 464 MKII cassette 4 track.

I absolutely loved it and used it for everything.

I had a 414 (either it was a black EB or BULS - most likely a BULS but I'll have to ask. I don't have it with me anymore) an RE20, AKG C3000 (original black with green stripe), AKG C1000 (original), an original RCA 77 (the ribbon was new though. That came out rarely. I was too scared to break the ribbon), an EV 635A and an SM57.

I used the M69 80% of the time. It just worked and required little to no help.

My favorite use for it was acoustic guitar. I read all the books and magazines suggesting mic placement and none of those suggestions ever sounded good to me. And when I put my ear where it was suggested to put the mic, it didn't sound good to me either.

So I figured, it sounds good when I play it. Maybe I should put the mic up at my ear level and point it down at the guitar. It sounded great! No EQ needed. It sounded like what I was expecting an acoustic guitar should sound like.

I need to find one of those mics again.

As a side note, the Telefunken M80 kinda gives me a similar experience to what I remember of the M69.
