Please pardon if I am asking a question you already answered in your reference to the other recording, Bella Voce; is Lorraine using a Pearl CC22, an AEA R84 or something else and, are the preamps Sonosax? As with all classically trained artists, she could wow us without a mic but, I am very happy you captured her so faithfully with enhancement to merit the nomination.

Lorrie Lieberson was recorded in the Martin Theatre at The Ravinia Festival.

Captured with 2 overhead AKG 451 cardioids on a bar in German narrow spaced config. (24 inches separation) and 2 Schoeps MK4 cardioid mics in foam mice flat on the stage in front of her. Piano was recorded with Schoeps MK 2 omni in the middle of the piano and with a Neumann U89 inside the butt end of the piano looking towards the player to pick up extra bass report.

Console was a Yamaha 03D fed by EAR 824 tube mic amps
(stereo pair+vocal mice) and a BG No. 1. (piano) Recorded on a Nagra V.

Digging my Wunder CM7-GS into my BAE 1073 or Avedis MA5 for vocals most of the time these days. But I just released a single today where I did the lead vocals through a '60s RCA 77DX ribbon (into my AEA RPQ500 from memory)

Yes, I do love the R84 and the R88. I have a few R84 mics and I use them for violin, cello, singers, and brass. Especially good on tuba.

R88 is a special mic and I use it with EQ as a main pair on choirs, piano, brass.

AEA mics and also Coles 4038 (used with the Thermionic Culture Snow Petrel mic amp) are big faves here.

The 87 was being bitchy, so I put up an sE T2. It worked well for 2 different rappers.

In 24 hours I am using Studio One at 301 in Sydney.

Either going to use the Telefunken ELA 251 or a Neumann 47 fet or 67 or an 87.

Gonna have to watch my sibilance as there are a few sss,s in the lyric.

Im going for that upfront in your face vocal so Ill also being using the LA2a and an 1176.

There'll be a Bricasti and a Lexicon 480l in there as well.

Going to strap a Fairchild 670 on the master buss for good measure.

I'm still looking for my favorite pre to use with the U67. So, I have a Weight Tank 72 on the way and will give that a go. I hear it's quite something with a U67 so we'll see!

Focusrite Red 6 and Neve 1073 mostly interact with mine, but I want something different to give it a little more balanced middle. It is potentially a HUGE sound especially when I use it with a tube preamp and the @ AudioScape V-Comp and a bluestripe 1176.

I got a T2 last week partly based on reports I'd seen from you. I recorded some vocals a few days back through my Avalon 737 and got the best recordings I've had of my own voice in years! I've tried some very high end mic/pre combos too and until I can finish building my 87 clones the T2 is my new go to.

What is your impression of the 1073 & U67 Ri combo? Have you noticed that the 1073 makes the mic sound more mid-forward (sometimes in an unpleasant way)? Or this combination sounds smooth?

It does, not on its own but when you try to fit it in a mix, definitely. Not unpleasant, but a tiny bit boxy.

More neutral an clean preamps seem to alleviate this, but I hear good things about the Weight Tank 72 with the U67. I'll definitely post a sample and comparison when I have time.

I share this experience with u67 -> 1073. API 512/3124 has this feel also, but in a diff way. On the right source invisible on the wrong source varies between slightly boxy and mild honk. Its nothing to fret about in my experience, but less eq would be nice. I can always choose another mic, but I know how huge a 67 can get and sometimes that's what I am going for. Excited to hear about the Weight Tank. I own the 14B and use it a lot.

Today I used the mic that was built into my computer. I can't tell if it's a dynamic or condenser, so I applied liberal EQ, reverb, chorus, and other stuff I don't have a clue how to use. Worked out well for my online chat.

What? No auto-tune? Nothing beats an online chat like a chorus of T-Pain voices. LOL

I'm really glad to hear you dig the T2. They just don't get talked about much, but the titanium capsule is a really cool thing. Even once you have you 87 clone, the T2 will still be a good compliment.

On my session yesterday I used my ADK Z47 on a male vocal into my usual chain, an ADL 600 into a Tube Tech CL1b.

As mentioned in planning, Saturday was 67 Reissue > Pueblo JR > Aurora(n).

First time in quite a while going all solid state after the 67, no time for compression today, just a quick arrangement all piped via mix bus to an M7 parallel. No eq or plugs. (One crazy mistake during tracking was all me; for a key vocal, I armed only the Soyuz 013 for a second partial take of high female melody, no time to track it again. It is in the linked sample, may be interesting to some to identify where the 67 ends and 013 begins)

I also asked them to give me their heart, no one held back, may have pushed too hard on some high notes.

As some know from my posts, I primarily work with young folks, this time our male vocalist was the oldest at 19, female vocalists were 16, 15, 13 and 10.

Alexa, a 10 year old young lady who loves to sing songs of praise, in front of a microphone, the 67, for the first time, along with a talented teen and a very young adult. She's 10, her timing is good, is hitting the notes, was prepared and professional. One lyric hiccup near the end but, Alexa completed her vocal in a single take, then, the next morning, stood and sang in front of 400+ well-spaced adults. I love these kids!:
