Here's a clip recorded with the FF800. Sorry, it's a little corny, and has a Clapton ending. And the lead guitar is too loud at the first part of the end. Recorded for a wedding....
You can really hear how bad the converters are in this one I think. :-) Just kidding. Sounds like music to me. I guess I'll be the first one to get slammed for how bad my gear is.

Forget test tones and Golden Ears! That is a great tune! Thanks! It sounds like.... a record? Great mix.
The mid-level converters sound great these days. RME is a great item. That song is all you need to know about the 800.
I have been a happy FF user for the last few years. I bought it to replace a MOTU Traveler I had been using. The best feature of the FF is the TotalMix software which is incredibly flexible and allows for routing of any input to any output via an easy to manage GUI. The prettiness of the MOTU software actually was a hindrance. I instantly found the utilitarian look of the software much more intuitive. The drivers are super solid and I've had zero issues between hardware and software, which is something I can't say for MOTU.
From a sonic perspective, I wouldn't say the conversion is anything mind-blowing. It's mid-level. Most converters these days, even cheap ones, are halfway decent and the comparative differences between products are often very subtle especially for the average listener. I have Mytek 8x192 and RADAR so my standard for converters is high. What I hear when listening to the FF converters is cheaper chips in the analog stages. It like the difference between my Otari tape deck and my Studer. They sound super close, but one has a hair more fidelity overall.

So is the FF800 and UFX the same general mid level? Is the Apogee Ensemble any better? Is there anything out there that is a firewire interface that is really good? I heard the saffire, Steinberg 816x and the presonus interfaces are bad either.

This clip sold me. It doesnt seem heavily produced or anything. Just raw and good
