Indeed, mic first. Then mic/preamp/genre matching by testing out at your own place with the artists/vocals you frequently (would like to) record.
What mic do you have?
That said, a (good clone)1073 with a TubetechCL1B or an Avalon737SP would be the ones I would check.
Try first and then buy used. Better save up for quality industry standards that will keep their value.
