Today in the studio: mic surgery.

Still need to get new foam for this RE-20, but for now I cleaned the screen, the capsule and soldered on new wires for the XLR connector (ones inside were frayed ).

This is a newer model and it only has one small hole in the bottom part of the body for wires. On the old models they had enough decency to supply an extra hole. Luckily my 26 gauge silicone wires just made it through with a little effort.

Titan + throw the laptop on top of it, phones, plugs, virtual instruments ....done. My room treatment is the cushion on my headphones.

Today I added another couple 500 Series Pres (Rupert Neve 511). I had a couple of them a few years back and traded them, really missed them and added a couple back today. Also, added an XLR patch to the routing now that my outboard pre’s are once again amassing, and spent the night in back of the rack in cable it hell.

Last week for Mother’s Day, I tracked my nephews for their Mom as a gift. Pretty talented kids, singer/songwriters in a Southern Rock/New Country vibe. Little snippet from while I was editing. Your typical track both (2 songs) in 2 hours, edit, and pop it out the next day kind of thing. :D

Finally set-up for something I have wanted to do for a while; dual-tracking Johanna vocals to Josephson C725 and Josephson C715. (Spanish tonight if I understood correctly)

Dig. I was thinking about how drums sound cool when you put a pair of headphones on and play, and was wondering how it would sound to put a pair of headphones (not plugged in) on a binaural head and recorded drums.

Sure thing, I'll try to remember that. Or you can remind me if/when I post photos of the final product, which I almost certainly will. Probably some YouTube video also.

Hands on mixing with this HP touch screen laptop, kind of incredible. It's more convenient than either the small Reaper or Studio One faders. Although you could probably edit Reaper for this pretty easily.

I just refurbished my home studio. New acoustic treatment, bass traps and diffussors. Can't wait to hear how it sounds.

Last couple of weeks, I started building out my 500 racks. Added two new pieces of gear this week and one today. Added a Focusrite Clarett OctoPre too, just for temp ADAT AD, but should be adding a Ferrofish Pulse 16 later this week.

The New SSL E-EQ, and the Empirical Labs Derresser. I’m creating a vid comparing the SSL E-EQ to all of the plugs (UA, SSL, Plug-in Alliance, Waves, Slate), and will post it when it’s live.

Looks like it's time for another CAPI 511 chassis, I just finished two more AML 1073 pres and this one is full. Long term plan is to fill a chassis with AML and fill another with CAPI pres. I'll probably hang onto the Camdens though.

I'm very interested to find out about sound quality of SSL E-EQ vs SSL native Channel strip. How close is native to the real thing

So I'm about 90% done with this, and the results are interesting.

Today, I spent the day working on my website and YT channel, in prep to release a bunch of vids, and this shootout will be the first legitimate video on my new channel.

Added the aforementioned Ferrofish Pulse16mx today. Starting to come into a workflow. At current that gives me 34 channels of I/O, (not shown is the UA stuff that is on the desk).. not that I’ll ever need that much, but more than enough to confuse the routing in my head :D

After weeks of planning, I spent the last few days breaking down the studio for a live event in a barn tonight. I really do enjoy using my gear for studio and live, all solid state this time out. Thankfully I only do this a few times a year. Almost sold the road racks during Covid, glad I still have them.

Once we finish the concert tonight, I look forward to reinstalling with a much less cluttered cabling plan for the studio rebuild.

i'm with you bro', except that i'm using almost all but digital outboard and a huge digital desk: i got all my gear in 12hu racks (well, hopefully soon: it's been taking me months to configure all my gear...), including a madi/aes converter in each rack so i just plug in power and madi and i'm ready to go within a few minutes!

First rhythm tracking session in a while reminded me that player > drums > room > mics > pres. Thank goodness for Coils and CAPIs to glue it all together beautifully. My diy subkick I built in 2001 using a spare genelec driver is still digging to china 20 years later.
