which Langevin models are we comparing ??
the Ampex 601 is a very fine preamp,
even with heaters powered with AC.
a bit bass shy but on par with a 5116,
though the 601 has additional gain stages..

Columbia used plenty of condensor microphones, strapped for 200 ohms, into both RCA and Langevin tube microphone preamps with un-terminated secondaries.
One would have to be partially deaf to say their recordings were unbearably bright.
