Interesting that they've done away with MIDI for the first time in this line. Very cool, the dual-layer pedals tho.

I use a MusicomLab EXF loop switcher, and rely on MIDI to change presets on my Strymon Timeline, Mobius, and Big Sky.

Lots of people do similar things. So to answer your question... probably than you think!

Yes but this is the ME series, which is the entry level. The GT series has much more functionality. Someone using an ME unit is most likely using it standalone.

What appeals to me about this unit is easy on the fly editing and effect spillover. Anybody know other units in this price range that do effect spillover?

I know for sure that the Zooms don't do spill-over. (G3/G3X/G5)

It's due for delivery today but we're the middle of a blizzard here in PA, USA so I doubt UPS will show up. Will keep you guys posted. I have to say, I am a little worried about the sound quality. The demos I heard online were really bad. I'm hoping it'll sound better in front of my VHT 12/20 tube combo.

I have the Boss GT100 and I like that unit. The ME80 has the amps from the GT100 so I think you will like it

I won't be using the COSM at all. Going thru my tube amp.

I picked up one yesterday on sale. After fiddling with a used GT-10 for half an hour I gave up trying to program it. As a longtime ME 50 user it only took me a minute to whip up some good sounds on the ME 80. It might not be as versatile as a GT model but as some effects are doubled up on different dials it is more versatile than previous ME models. For example you can have 2 or even three delays going at once.
I'm going to unbox it now.

I'm pretty impressed so far. It's a big step up from the ME50 ... and so it should be, it's been 10 years!
The tuner is not great. It just gives you a letter and an up/down arrow. It does the job I guess.
I'm not really an overdrive connoisseur, but I think they sound good. I've just been playing through headphones and have had 0 problems with noise or hiss. So you can crank up the drives as much as you want. Nice.
What I love the most is that you can have 3 delays going at once and the display actually shows the time digitally (unlike the old ME50) so I can set up delays and modulation to make patterns with ease.
I like the dual foot switches too. In manual mode you have 7 pedals to kick in and out effects. Awesome!

Received the BOSS ME-80 today. It was HORRIBLE and is on its way back already. Maybe I'm just spoiled by my TC Nova System, but the ME-80 sucked the life out of my tone, was buzzy, harsh and all-around unpleasant going through my VHT 12/20 tube amp. I also heard digital artifacts reminding me of the Fender Mustang v1 days. Man, I am SO bummed about this. I tried every setting and the thing just wasn't good. The Nova System is just so pristine and organic that I think I am ruined for life!

I need an all in one unit for live gigs. I'm really tired of the multiple pedals and wires set-up I've been using. I thought the ME-80 was going to be the answer. With it's built in Freeze function, foot controller for volume (& other) and up to 3 delays available I was just about sold. But now I'm thinking maybe I should go with a Nova System along with my (EHX)Freeze pedal, a volume pedal and an extra delay (Timebender). Decisions decisions... Ain't life a beach?

I highly recommend the TC Nova System. It's quiet, lush, organic and just wonderful. Can't say enough good things about it. I really wanted the ME-80 to be good....but it just wasn't.

Different strokes for different folks. I tried out the TC Nova but wasn't impressed. I have no noise problems with the ME-80.
I wouldn't give up on it. If you can, try them out first and then choose. No need to give up on the Boss yet. These things are all highly subjective.

BTW, my set up is direct into an MTR, no tube amps. I don't play live at the moment.

Hi all, great forum and site at Gearslutz, my very first post.

I've used Boss Multi FX since 2004, I've used the GT6 and the GT8. My GT8 malfunctioned the other day, broken and I needed to perform as I'm a guitarist by trade, I'm not complaining it lasted 12 years. So because I'm gigging overseas I went to the only Boss dealer on the island miles away and purchased a ME-80.

Last night was my first live show with it, I used "memory" mode. There were lots of occasions I went to use the CTRL pedal (whilst playing guitar and singing simultaneously) and hit the "manual mode" button instead because they're right next to each other, and this causes complete silence and made me feel really embarrassed, especially if I were about to solo, then I have to look down and scramble around to get my guitar sound back. Ruined many a song and made the performance seem amateurish.

Can anyone give a solution to this problem please, on my GT6 and GT8 it was never a problem. I understand it's a new pedal and I need to get used to it, but whilst playing, singing and performing I can't stop look down and press the CTRL button with detailed accuracy. Is there a setting whereby I can over-ride the "memory/manual" button or get it to act as CTRL as well. I'm really disappointed, the GT-100 is just too big (and expensive) and not portable for my gig bag and I play 5/6 times a week and don't know what to do now, back to work tonight with the ME-80 and I have to re-program the pedal all over again and get by without the CTRL pedal which I've paid for as part of the product and like to use. Any answers and advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

The ME-80 is a nice little practice pedal. I would suggest moving up a used GT-100. Night and day difference in features AND especially sound quality.

Well second night now finished gigging with the pedal, last night was just concentrating too much as it was new but tonight I was listening a lot too and feeling the pedal. Unfortunately the positives are mainly just the clean sound, light crunches and more natural sounding solo's, Hotel California vibe etc. All the higher gain options all sound a bit fake, processed and fizzy to me, not on par with the GT6 or GT8, plus the expression pedal feels really cheap and isn't very good. Editing options are very limited also.

It might be a trip back to the Spanish music shop to ask what other options are available, the GT-100 is just a bit overkill though I think and a bit massive in size too.

You what's lame. I love yamaha CS-80. And I love the related ME-80 Plugin that simulates the CS-80.
So, Gearslutz sents me weekly picks with this thread in it because I love ME-80.

This "fake" ME-80 is really riding the hype with that name if you ask me.

For anyone who's interested or thinking getting one of these, I've been using it about a month now, playing live 5 nights a week.

NB it's really important for anyone who is not using a guitar amp and going straight into the Desk/PA, that you connect a mini-jack into the headphone socket else you don't get the amp simulation. Really bizarre and I can't see it mentioned in the manual. That's why it sounded so rubbish for me, then when I did that voila, the drive and distortion patches sound like they're supposed to, rather than a terrible cheap digital sound.

Also, I'd recommend changing the sensitivity of the pedal if you've used Boss before, as factory setting makes it feel really cheap, which is only my opinion, some may like how it's set.

Other than that it's actually pretty good for what it is. I'm doing a certain type of gigging at the minute though, wanting something light and portable as I can't park close to my gigs. For anyone doing the band circuit I'd overlook this pedal and get the GT-100 or the 1000.
