I'm pretty surprised that this software hasn't blown up in popularity overnight. It's probably because of all the amp modelers on the market that claim to produce all the realistic and subtle characteristics of your "Real Amp"; Well, I am here to tell you that ToneX actually does.

I am also surprised people aren’t raving about it more. It’s the first software I really enjoy playing through.

It won’t replace my amps but it makes late night playing at sane levels enjoyable.

I've still got some old IK stuff on one of my old computers that ran xp.
Last time I checked back with IK ( quite a few years ago) you had to download a load of bloatware some store BS. Is this still the case? Wouldn't mind giving this a spin out of curiosity otherwise.
ps does this make me sim curious? Bit dodgy round here.

Surprisingly I haven’t heard of this, but it’s a non starter for me as an IK product…just not had good experiences with this company.

Yea man, it's really excellent. I haven't enjoyed playing through many of the factory or user uploads. I really utilize it to be able to quickly jump between my own amps.

Yea I remember not liking the IK plugins years back. I don't know what changed but I absolutely love them as a company now. Now you download everything through their product manager. You are not required to download anything that isn't part of the software you are using.

Tonex is the first amp sim that FEELS like an amp andresponds to pick attack and volume control on the guitar, and I pretty much have tried everything and own a lot of other sims on iPadOS. Ymmv, but I love it and bought the Max version. I now pend more time playing and less time fiddling with presets, either dialing in something I like or dialing out some digital nastiness that I didn’t like. It was worth the store download thing on my Mac. But on iOS you only need download the app.

That is one place tonex shines, compared to the competition and even regular Amplitube— clean and edge of breakup.

TONEX is close to being the only amp sim I use now. I have all the Nembrini, Neural, Amplitube 5, Tonehub, Line 6, Guitar Rig, BIAS Amp, and Overloud stuff.
Some of those get used from time to time but mostly it's TONEX for me. I do split tracking with my Kemper Stage and a D.I. straight in, I do like the Kemper, but
I prefer having options to change the guitar amp tone later if I need to.

Sure, there will always be doubters who say TONEX isn't "it" for them. I don't care..it's "it" for me.

My favorite aspect of TONEX? Tone.NET. Just go there, create your account for free, then browse for any amp
you can think of. I've found captures for all kinds of boutique amps, like Komet, Bad Cat, Divided by 13, Supro, and Dumble..amps I've recorded in my studio,
but never could afford. Found a third-party capture of an Acoustic 360 bass amp (John Paul Jones' amp) that
nails that vintage sound.

You can also run TONEX inside Amplitube 5 and use Amplitube 5's pedals, cabs, and post effects. TONEX's stomp captures don't include modulation pedals, or
delays or reverbs, so this is really a cool option.

IMO, iK knocked it out of the park with this product.

The thing about Tonex is they are just raw amps, not some heavilly processed preset, just the raw amp or pedal. But wit unmatched feel and response.

Yeah, it’s cool playing some models of amps I haven’t ever tried before.

My only wish is that I could delete all the tone models and presets I don’t want.

Also I could see how people could easily get turned off. So many of the stock models/presets are gained up so much that it sounds like total shit.

Sounds great. I just have the CS version. I own a lot of IKM products and enjoy using them. Big AT5 user here.

But quite frankly, have no big desire to get into ToneX. I have amp sims coming out my ears and I have bigger problems in the studio than finding good amp sim sounds. Maybe it's sign, the amp sim market is truly saturated.

Of course..an amp in a room is not a plugin.

I've heard this so many times from guitar players that I've lost count. Here's the truth..NOTHING will ever sound like your amp in your room. Ever.

I've been recording guitarists for nearly thirty years.
I know that the main objection is that a plug in does not RESPOND like a real amp.

Can TONEX sound like a recording of a real amp? In my experience as a producer/engineer..yes. Actually for me I prefer using amp sims on D.I. tracks after they are recorded. And I've often heard guitarists say "man, my amp sounds great on this track" when in fact they are listening to the amp sim'd track.

Here's another point.. I'm a keyboard player. When I ask guitarists what they think of my "sampled" piano sound,
no matter how lame I know it sounds, they almost always say oh that piano sounds great.

It’s not about the sound of the amp in the room.

It’s about the relationship between the guitar, amp and speaker. This is something you can’t simulate. You can crank up your studio monitors but it won’t be the same thing. It is as important to some guitar players as the feel of hammers and vibrations is to a piano player. I have been playing piano for 30 years by the way.

This is not a criticism of Tonex or any other sim/model. This is a fact often ignored by many.

FWIW, I always record a split signal when recording guitarists. I use a D.I., the thru of the D.I. feeds the guitarist's amp, so they have their fave amp to play
"to" and can enjoy playing, and I put a mic on the amp
and record it. The D.I.'s output goes direct to my DAW and I record that direct line at the same time. Then when the guitarist is finished and goes home, I toss out the recorded amp track and put a plugin, usually TONEX, on the D.I. track, because it always sounds better, and I can change the tone to fit the mix, rather than fitting the mix to the tone.

Like I said, I have never had a guitarist listen to a final mix and say hey wait a minute that isn't my amp. They all think it's their recorded amp.

Over the course of my lifetime, I've learned that whatever instrument we play, our standard for what is acceptable matters only to US. Whether I use a sampled piano or a real piano on a track doesn't matter to listeners. They only care about the song and the singer.

The amp sim market is saturated, and they generally all sound like ass. ToneX is better than a fractal and it sits as a plugin on my computer. There is no competition with that for me.

I agree with that amp in the room being a totally different experience. In my situation, my guitar cab is isolated in my attic, so I always listen through my studio monitors, which is why ToneX is really perfect for me. Again, I use the software to house my own amps, which it does pretty much flawlessly. I don't care to grab other people's captures.

This ToneX is incredible, it's the first plugin that I like more on clean/crunch than on hi-gain. In its favor is the fact that it doesn't have that digital veil typical of Fractal systems, and a more natural midrange than the Kemper's.
Not so bad, especially considering it costs 149$ and not 1499$.
However, upon more critical listening, it's clear that when you pick harder on the strings, it gets into trouble (see attachment). As if the sound is squashed, compressed, while a real amp gets thicker and sprays harmonics everywhere.
Things that have already been discussed extensively even with graphs, but it is pointless to repeat. Walls don't understand.

Well I can clear that up for you. I had the compressor engaged on that one.

Also I don’t know about spraying harmonics everywhere, that’s the kind of thing that will get you locked up if you’re not careful.

I have been told I got bad hearing.. but I can tell a sim from a real amp. At least for the music genres I am familiar with. And I am far from the worlds greatest expert on guitar.
