Badfinger has to be close to the top.

Badfinger, Great Band they did get a lot of recognition, and did put out a lot of classics.

Kiwi wanted to know my point. Well, to give recognition/expose bands that should be heard.... Same with some LP's that should have done a lot better.

"Smile - Maquee" and "Lusk - Free Mars" are two of the coolest recordings ever for exact opposite reasons; but were both screwed partly because of the recording. They require very high quality playback to appreciate. "Smile - Maquee" because of the simple raw mix with complex natural ambience and big analog tone; and "Lusk - Free Mars" because of the tightly layered, interwoven instrumentation that completely fills a huge soundfield. Both albums sound muddy with the former coming off dull and the latter irritating. But on a quality full-range playback system suddenly the details become musical and deep rather than dissonant and crushed.

First band that came to mind when seeing the title of this thread. Indeed Badfinger got ripped off which essentially lead to two suicides.

Until the 70s (if not later) it's hard to think of a major act that wasn't completely screwed over by their label and/or management. (Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Dylan, Leonard Cohen etc.)

If I understand the idea behind the thread correctly, then the following names immediately come to mind:

Big Star
Emitt Rhodes
Rodriguez

Of course if I thought about it for awhile I could probably fill the page with names.

But would Badfinger have come to mind in this thread if Tom and Pete hadn't killed themselves?

I always got the impression that the tragedy of Badfinger wasn't how badly they got screwed over, but rather how badly they reacted to getting screwed over.

I mean, yeah, they definitely got screwed over. And badly. But I'll bet there are a lot of once-successful bands that got screwed over just as badly, and instead of leading to two tragic deaths they just led to several bitter former musicians with some entertaining stories about "back in the day."

Anyone who ever got in Allen Klein's way.

Pretty much every major act of the 60s and 70s was screwed over by their manager, label or both. About the only one I can think of that wasn't was Led Zeppelin.

The Moody Blues did quite well as a band but Justin Hayward made a bad mistake when he was 17 signing an eight year song publishing contract with Lonnie Donegan who then owned publishing for all Hayward songs up until 1974. Hayward got a small advance for signing with Donegan but Donegan made millions from "Nights in White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Question", and others. Donegan gave Hayward the 12-string guitar he used on "Nights" and then sneakily took it back. Hayward was able to buy back the guitar after Donegan's death in 2002. The Donegan family continues to receive royalties from Hayward's songs.

The Turtles are at the top of the list I think.

Have to think that Page did more of the screwing. At least of other artists. Our manager, Scott Cameron, sued Zep for millions for stealing songs from Willie Dixon. And then Willie (allegedly) got screwed again by Scott, in the settlement distribution.... allegedly! Scott died some years ago, and hopefully fair compensations have been settled with Willie's family.

In regards to bands that *weren't* screwed over...I am probably misremembering exactly, but in the new Rick Beato interview with John Densmore and Robbie Krieger - when The Doors switched from Columbia to Elektra after their first album they were given the rights to their masters back. Almost unheard of then or now. I think their manager did well for them. Too bad Jim had to die.

That's a good point.
From my understanding the manager had all their wages in a holding account and didn't release it to them.
Meanwhile they were playing big gigs and getting chart success while sleeping on floors. So sad.

The other way round really but Rick Wakeman had a habit of screwing himself over, causing him to go bankrupt and become homeless for a while.
The concerts he did were successful, they just cost more to put on than the revenue they brought in. His manager once thought he could stop Wakeman from doing another financially disastrous concert because the venue he wanted was set up for an ice show, Rick just decided to do the show on ice!

There was a lot more aweness of contract structure in the 70's.
Bands like Boston were negotiating full creative control and the notion of 'leasing' the master tapes to the record companies started to become quite common giving bands
a bigger return of thiers and the company's investment.

The band Chevelle openly discusses how badly their finances and record deals have gone. Multi Platinum albums and
they flat out said that if their current album doesn't pay their basic bills they will hang it up.
