Waves SSL E-Channel

When I first came up I worked a fair bit on the old SSL behemoths, E and G-series consoles were the norm in every big studio (although many were replacing them with the J).

I didn't have much faith in the analog emulation hype of the late naughts, and my expectations were low when a friend first opened this plugin. I was surprised when its compression and EQ instantly reminded me of the sound and feel of the old consoles. I also demo'd SSL's own plugin of the E-channel, but to me this one has more vibe.

I have not A/B'd with the console it emulates, but 9 times out of 10 this plugin will do what I need it to do, although you need to be a bit prudent about gain-staging if you want it to sound like the OG.

This is not a one those things that instantly make something sound better, there are probably better channel strip plugins nowadays. For me, the familiarity and ease of use make it a winner. It doesn't have a ton of options I don't need or understand, and I usually know within 30 seconds whether it's right or not.

The base frequencies of the EQ are well chosen, turning up the highs opens up the sound without harshness, and turning up the lows adds weight without wooliness.
The compressor, what can I say, it sounds like an SSL compressor from the 90's. Used in moderation it's transparent, but crush it on drums and you get that Teddy Riley sound.
Even the gate is actually very effective, although I never use it anymore as we have better options now.

I don't know if this is as valid of a purchase for people who don't have that history with the consoles, but it sounds good and these days it's very cheap. I feel you can't go wrong with this.
