SPL Channel One MK3: The Ultimate Channel Strip for Voice

Like with music, in voice-over work, your sound is your brand—your calling card. The competition is fierce, and standing out requires not just a great sound, but the right sound. The SPL Channel One mk3 is, without question, the best tool I’ve ever used to craft that sound. This channel strip is packed with features that feel purpose-built for voice work, yet it’s versatile enough to excel in a variety of applications.

The first standout feature is what has to be the most natural sounding De-esser I’ve ever heard. Instead of relying on compression or dynamic EQ like traditional de-essers, it uses a unique phase cancellation circuit to completely null sibilance. The result is a set-it-and-forget-it tool that works flawlessly and sounds transparent.

Equally impressive is the Transient Designer, a surprise gem for VO artists. Perfect for taming midrange resonances in small, reflective booths, like the infamous midrange ‘honk’ of a U87, or mitigating plosives, it’s also capable of much more. Adding a touch of sustain can bring depth and richness to the midrange, helping your voice sit more comfortably in a mix. Dialing back the "Attack" setting slightly softens the initial burst of energy from plosives, reducing harshness without compromising clarity. In some cases, it works so well that you may not need a pop filter as often.

The tube saturation circuit is another highlight. Running the tube grid at a full 250 volts, it delivers rich, authentic warmth and harmonic complexity that adds depth to your voice and can make it really pop forward. It’s subtle yet powerful, offering just enough character without overwhelming your natural tone. Paired with the one-knob compressor—which is transparent and effective—and a well-designed parametric EQ, the Channel One mk3 gives you total control over your sound. The EQ includes a “19 kHz Air Band,” perfect for adding sparkle and vibrance without introducing harshness.

Another standout feature is the Mic A/B input selector, which allows you to connect two microphones simultaneously and audition them with the flip of a switch. This is a game-changer for VO artists or engineers who want to compare mics quickly without the need for patching or re-cabling. While you can’t use both inputs at once, the ability to A/B test through the exact same circuit is a luxury you’ll wonder how you lived without. Alongside the individual Mic A/B phantom power buttons, you also have Pad, Phase, and an 80Hz high-pass filter. Each button is backlit and feels sturdy, giving you confidence in its durability and reliability. There’s also a 1/4” instrument input on the front panel for direct-in recording, adding even more versatility to an already feature-rich unit.

Visually and functionally, the Channel One mk3 embodies analog perfection. The warm amber glow of the VU meter doesn’t just look fantastic—it invites you to a world of analog richness inside. Running on an 18-volt rail, the discrete analog circuit offers shockingly low self-noise, ensuring your signal remains pristine. From the moment you power the SPL Channel One on, it exudes the character and sound of a million-dollar studio, all packed into a rugged and premium, two-space rack format that wouldn’t look out of place as a control panel on the Death Star.

Voice-over is about connecting with the listener on a personal, emotional level. After realizing that my stack of plugins was starting to feel cold and clinical, I knew it was time to explore a fully analog chain. In this regard, the SPL Channel One mk3 doesn’t just perform well—its smooth analog warmth glues all the features together into a cohesive sound that feels effortless and professional.

To say the SPL Channel One mk3 may be the single best channel strip for voice work would be an understatement. The Channel One mk3 delivered depth, clarity, and character that felt immersive and human. Its organic, dynamic nature breathing life into performances in a way digital tools often struggle to replicate. In the weeks I’ve been using it, the Channel One mk3 has proven itself across dozens of commercials to be an essential part of my VO workflow. Its suite of features feels almost purpose-designed for voice work, making it easier than ever to shape a signature sound that stands out in a fiercely competitive field.

For anyone looking to elevate their sound with a fully analog chain, the SPL Channel One mk3 offers an unparalleled combination of features, performance, and design. It doesn’t just help you craft the right sound—it makes the entire process a joy.
